DSU Takes Down Magicians 73-62

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The Delta State University Statesmen basketball team earned its second straight win and fourth of the season in a 73-62 defeat of LeMoyne-Owen on Tuesday night at Bruce Johnson Hall.

    How It Happened
  • Although LeMoyne-Owen scored the first basket of the game, Delta State quickly took the lead on a Terry Morris' 3-pointer. Morris' triple at the 18:05 mark gave the Statesmen the 3-2 lead, and they never looked back.
  • The Magicians closed within one, 8-7, on a Larry McGaughey three, but DSU followed with a 22-2 run over 9:04 to earn the 30-9 advantage with 6:38 to play in the half.
  • Delta State soon let its comfortable lead slip away, as LOC closed out the half with an 11-4 run, cutting DSU's lead to 37-22 heading into the locker room.
  • The Green-and-White opened second half play with buckets from Morris, Declan Harrick and Jack Madgen before PJ Davis polished it off with a dunk, giving Delta State the 48-30 at the 16:14 mark in the second frame.
  • LeMoyne-Owen crawled back within eight, 68-60, with 1:51 remaining on the game clock, but DSU was able to fend off the Magicians' comeback as Delta State went on to win by a final 73-62.
            Notables
  • Head Coach Jim Boone is now six wins away from 400 Division II wins and 14 away from eclipsing 500-career victories.
  • Devin Schmidt's double-double performance, 16 points and 11 assists, pushed him into the top 10 all-time scorers list at Delta State. The junior guard is now 10th with 1,229 career points. Schmidt is also sixth in career assists with 281. 
  • Jack Madgen is just 66 points away from reaching the 1,000-point club. His 10 points versus the Magicians gave him 934 career points.
  • Declan Harrick produced a career-high eight points and seven rebounds in the win against LOC.
  • Scoring was dispersed among nine Statesmen. All but one player for Delta State that recorded playing time contributed to the scoreboard.
     
Game Changer
  • The Statesmen outshot the Magicians 52.8 percent (28-for-53) to 40.7 percent (22-for-54).
 
Who's Next
  • Delta State returns home to take on the Boll Weevils of Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday, Nov. 28. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
