Statesmen Down UAM, 76-63, for Third Straight Win

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – The Statesmen basketball team of Delta State University posted a 76-63 win over Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

    How It Happened
  • Each team traded baskets to open the contest before Delta State took control. The Statesmen went 4-for-5 from the field over 2:24 to lead 15-11 with buckets from Terry Morris, Zelvin Smith Jr. and Devin Schmidt.
  • A 14-2 DSU run led to an Arkansas-Monticello scoring drought that spanned 5:19 until UAM's Jamal Peterson drained a 3-pointer at the 9:19 mark to notch the score at 22-14 in favor of DSU.
  • The Green-and-White earned their largest lead of the half, 31-15, on a Declan Harrick layup with 5:21 to go before halftime.
  • Arkansas-Monticello closed the gap to 11, 40-29, to head into the locker room.
  • Delta State's defense came out of the break firing on all cylinders, forcing three turnovers in the opening four minutes of the second half. The Boll Weevils scored five points in their first three trips down the court before a 5:18 scoring drought put the score at 53-34 in favor of the Statesmen.
  • The Boll Weevils slowly started chipping away at the deficit by using five 3-pointers over five minutes. UAM cut the lead to 63-52 with 6:15 remaining on the game clock.
  • DSU denied the threat by allowing Arkansas-Monticello to shoot just 3-of-9 in the last 5:38. The Statesmen went on to win 76-63, their third in a row and fifth of the season.

  • Head Coach Jim Boone is now five wins away from 400 Division II wins and 13 away from eclipsing 500-career victories.
  • A native of Sevierville, Tenn., Devin Schmidt used 19 points to cap his career output at 1,248, ranking 10th on the all-time scoring list. Schmidt has now scored in double-figures in 19 consecutive contests, dating back to last season.
  • Jack Madgen is slowly climbing his way to the 1,000-point. The senior guard needs 58 points, as he holds 942 career points.
  • Senior Declan Harrick has established new career-highs in two straight contests: eight against LeMoyne-Owen and 13 against Monticello.
