Statesmen Fall in Conference Opener, 85-67, to West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Georgia – Delta State University men's basketball suffered an 85-67 road loss to open conference play against West Georgia on Thursday night at the Coliseum in Carrollton.

    How It Happened
  • Delta State's offense revolved around Devin Schmidt's scoring rampage to open the contest. Schmidt scored all 15 of DSU's points, all from 3-point range, to notch the score at 23-15 in favor of West Georgia at the 11:10 mark.
  • It wasn't until PJ Davis' layup with 9:19 to go in the half that another Statesman contributed to the scoring. UWG maintained a 23-17 lead.
  • The Wolves built on their lead, 28-17, going 8-of-9 from the field over a six-minute span.
  • DSU cut the deficit to five, 32-27, using a 7-2 run capped by a Davis layup.
  • West Georgia led by as many as 11 in the first half, but the Statesmen went into the break trailing 41-34, only the second time all season.
  • Out of the locker room, the two squads traded baskets, keeping the advantage with the Wolves.
  • UWG put together a minor spurt, executing on consecutive trips down the court to lead Delta State 66-52 with 9:03 left on the game clock.
  • Delta State only mustered 2-of-9 from the field in 4:09. That coupled with a 15-6 West Georgia run extended the Wolves' lead to 81-60 with 3:20 remaining in the contest.
  • The Wolves carried their momentum through to the final buzzer, handing DSU its second loss of the season with a final score 85-67.

  • Cleveland, Miss., product PJ Davis put up the best effort in his tenure with the Green-and-White, recording a career-high 22 points on 9-of-12 from the field and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe.
  • Devin Schmidt's 25-point performance moves him into ninth on the all-time scoring list at Delta State with 1,273 career points. He passed Gerald Glass (1986-87) with 1,249. The Sevierville, Tenn., native is now tied for fifth in the DSU record book for 3-pointers made (139) and fourth in 3-pointers attempted (351)
  • Jack Madgen is slowly climbing his way to the 1,000-point mark. The senior guard needs 49 points, as he holds 951 career points.
  • The Statesmen are now 0-2 on the season when trailing at halftime.
