Lady Statesmen Open GSC Play at UWG, UWA

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Delta State University women's basketball (3-0, 0-0 GSC) opens Gulf South Conference play against the Univeristy of West Georgia (0-6,0-0 GSC) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. (CST) at The Coliseum in Carrollton, Georgia. The Lady Statesmen will conclude the two-game road swing against the Univeristy of West Alabama (3-0, 0-0 GSC) on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Pruitt Hall in Livingston, Alabama.

  • Delta State is receiving votes in the latest WBCA USA Today Coaches and the D2SIDA Media polls this week.
  • Delta State is 33-5 all-time against West Georgia and has a 16-3 mark in Carrollton, Ga. The two teams split the season series last season with each team earning road wins.
  • Delta State has won five straight against West Alabama entering the 55th meeting.  The Lady Statesmen are 48-7 overall and 17-3 at Pruitt Hall.
  • Freshman Alondrea Rush's career-high 16 points led three Lady Statesmen in double figures en route to a 72-57 win over No. 15 Arkansas Tech on Nov. 29. Senior Becca Ruckes chipped in 14 points, five rebounds and two assists, while senior Chelsey Rhodes added 13 points and four assists. Junior Aspriona Gilbert grabbed a career-high nine rebounds, while Mary Carol Davis and Kaelin Kneelend each had seven boards.  
  • Delta State is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2012-13 when the Lady Statesmen started 5-0.

  • Rhodes is averaging 21.3 points per game (2nd GSC/13th NCAA), 3.3 assists (10th GSC) and 40.0 minutes per game (1st GSC). She is shooting 87.5 percent from the free throw line (5th GSC/74th NCAA) and has a 1.3 assist/turnover ratio (9th GSC).  
  • Ruckes 11.0 points and seven rebounds per game rank 20th and seventh in the GSC, respectively. Rush is 14th in the GSC with three assists per game.

  • Craig Roden will coach his 977th career NCAA game against West Georgia and has coached over 1,000 games at the collegiate level.

  • Rhodes earned GSC Women's Basketball Player of the Week Honors on (12.1.15), averaging 23.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game in two contests. The Lady Statesmen went 2-0 week with wins over GAC members Harding and No. 15 Arkansas Tech.
