Lady Statesmen Hold Off Shorter, 47-42

  • Short Story: Delta State University women's basketball survived a Shorter University rally to hold on for a 47-42 Gulf South Conference win Thursday at the Winthrop-King Centre.  Leading 42-41 with 1:28 left in the game, Seneca Walton made a 3-pointer and Rhandi Ball sank two free throws to give the Lady Statesmen a 47-42 lead with 17 seconds left.  Walton registered her third double-double of the season, leading the Lady Statesmen with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
How It Happened
  • Carly Keller scored eight of the Lady Statesmen's first 10 points, connecting on a 3-point field goal to give DSU a 10-4 lead just under five minutes into the game.
  • Shorter cut the lead to 15-9 on two Lindsey Crawford free throws at the 10:30 mark before Seneca Walton gave DSU a 17-9 lead that ended a 5:18 scoring drought with 6:38 remaining.
  • The Hawks went 9:58 without scoring before a Maggie Peeples free throw with :32 left in the half.  Peeples collected the rebound after missing the second free throw attempt and made a 3-point field goal with six seconds left to end a 10:24 field goal drought.
  • Delta State held the Hawks to 17 percent (4-of-23) shooting while shooting 44 percent (11-of-25) from the field to hold a 25-14 halftime advantage.
  •  The Lady Statesmen took a 33-20 lead on a Walton 3-pointer at the 17:20 mark of the second half before Shorter went on a 13-0 run to tie the game 33-33 on a Ieisha Alexander 3-pointer with 12:09 left.  A Chelsey Rhodes' free throw with 11:48 remaining ended a 6:28 scoreless drought and gave the Lady Statesmen a 34-33 lead.
  • Shorter cut the deficit to 42-41 on a Cynara Pitt layup with 2:11 to go before a Seneca Walton 3-pointer extended the lead to 45-42 with 1:28 left.
  • Rhandi Ball's two free throws with 17 seconds remaining gave the Lady Statesmen its final margin of victory, 47-42.
  • Seneca Walton scored 13 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.  Chelsey Rhodes had eight points and three assists while Rhandi Ball had seven points, eight rebounds and six steals.
Beyond the Numbers
  • Delta State held the Hawks to 42 points, 31 points below their season average, and had 19 second half points.
  • The win was the third straight overall and second straight road win for the Lady Statesmen, who have now won nine of their last 11 games.
  • The win also secured the Lady Statesmen the No. 3 seed in the Gulf South Conference Tournament that begins on Tuesday, March 3 at campus sites. The Lady Statesmen will host the sixth seed at a time to be announced.
  • 1,000 Points Club: Senior forward Seneca Walton scored 13 points and has 1,231 career points, 26th on the all-time scoring list. Junior guard Chelsey Rhodes added eight points to remain 31st on the all-time scoring list with 1,108 points. Senior forward Rhandi Balls scored eight points and has 1,039  career-points, 13 points shy of moving into 33rd.
  • Rhandi Ball's has 230 career steals after her six steals against Shorter, ranking eighth on the all-time steals list. The Pontotoc, Mississippi native is 15 steals shy of seventh.
  • The win was head coach Craig Roden's 512th career win and his 314th Gulf South Conference victory.
