  • Short Story: Emileigh Swafford scored 23 points and Shelby Brown added 12 points to lead Lee University (16-8, 13-8 GSC) to a 57-46 win over the Delta State University (16-9, 14-7 GSC) women's basketball team on Saturday, February 21 at Walker Arena. Chelsey Rhodes led the Lady Statesmen with 26 points.
     
How It Happened
  • Chelesy Rhodes' 3-pointer gave the Lady Statesmen a 12-4 lead with 13:00 left in the first half, but the Lady Statesmen would go the next 5:25 without scoring as Lee cut the lead to 14-10.
  • Kayla Beavers' 3-pointer gave Lee a 22-19 lead, and Chelsey Rhodes made two free throws to cut the deficit to 22-21 at halftime.
  • The Lady Statesmen shot 36 percent and had nine turnovers in the first half, while Lee shot 30 percent and committed five turnovers.
  • A Becca Ruckes' free throw tied the game 22-22 to open the second half, but Lee regained the lead for good on a Carrie Cheeks layup with 18:42 remaining.
  • The Flames went on an 11-3 run to take a 47-38 lead with 4:23 left and never let the Lady Statesmen get any closer than seven points the rest of the way.
  • Lee University had a 13-4 advantage in points off turnovers and outscored DSU 22-14 in the paint.
  • Chelsey Rhodes scored 26 points to lead the Lady Statesmen, while Seneca Walton and Anissa Jackson had five points and six rebounds apiece.
  • Emileigh Swafford led Lee with 23 points along with seven rebounds followed by Shelby Brown with 12 points. Christina Johnson had seven points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

  • Delta State had a four-game winning streak snapped and a two-game road win streak halted.  
  • After the loss, the Lady Statesmen remain in third and will host a first round Gulf South Conference Tournament game on Tuesday, March 3 at a time to be determined.
  • Chelsey Rhodes has scored in double digits in 19-of-24 games and her 26 points versus Lee marked her seventh game with 20 plus points.

Senior forward Seneca Walton had five points versus Lee and has 1,235 career points to move into 25th and senior forward Rhandi Ball scored four points and now has 1,043 career-points, nine points shy of moving into 33rd.
  • Rhandi Ball has 230 career steals after her six steals against Shorter, ranking eighth on the all-time steals list. The Pontotoc, Mississippi native is 15 steals shy of seventh.
