LEADOFFThe Lady Statesmen softball team of Delta State University got off to their best start in two seasons with the season opening series sweep over Henderson State.
With two wins under their belts, the Lady Statesmen will travel to Huntsville, Ala. to participate in the UAH Charger Chillout that features six games in three days.
Delta State will face Maryville and Montevallo on Friday, Feb. 6, Ohio Dominican and Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday, Feb. 7, and North Georgia and Southern Arkansas on Sunday, Feb. 8.
Last season, DSU went 2-4 at the Chillout with one of the wins coming from a 5-2 victory over Maryville University in eight innings.
Seniors
Amber Adcock and
Andrea Cutts and junior
Kaitlin Moore had a tremendous series offensively against Henderson State. Adcock went 4-for-7 with three singles and a homer and Moore went 4-for-8 with three singles and a double, while Cutts drove in four RBIs.
After her first appearance in a Lady Statesman uniform, freshman
Taylor Johnson was named the Gulf South Conference Pitcher and Freshman of the Week. The Long Beach native went seven innings for the complete game, giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits and one walk.
Conference play will begin Saturday, Feb. 14 with Delta State on the road in Livingston, Ala. DSU will take on West Alabama then extend the road trip with doubleheaders against Stillman College and University of Montevallo.
