Statesmen Suffer Double-Overtime Loss to West Florida, 86-82

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Statesmen basketball team of Delta State University suffered an 86-82 double-overtime loss to West Florida on the road at the UWF Field House on Thursday night.

  • Series: This marked the 16th between the Statesmen and Argos with DSU leading the all-time series 11-5. Delta State claimed a 72-69 victory in the first meeting of the season on Dec. 20 at Walter Sillers Coliseum in Cleveland, Miss.
  • Short Story:  The Statesmen basketball team of Delta State University suffered an 86-82 double-overtime loss to West Florida on the road at the UWF Field House on Thursday night.
 
How It Happened
  • The two teams traded baskets to start the contest, but West Florida soon came away with the lead.
  • Delta State kept the game close until late in the first half saw the score tilted 13 points in favor of UWF, 37-24, with nine seconds left.
  • Senior Alister Chisholm cut the lead to 10 with a 3-pointer to close out the half. DSU went into the locker room trailing the Argos 37-27.
  • UWF built on its lead by going on a 10-0 run to open second-half action.
  • Midway through the second half, the Argos led by 23, 54-31, with 11:47 on the clock.
  • The Statesmen stepped up and slowly started chipping away at the defecit.
  • A LaQuavius Cotton 3-pointer cut the lead to single digits, 61-53, with 2:28 left in regulation.
  • DSU strung together a 14-6 run to close out the half. A Devin Schmidt jumper knotted the game at 67-67 with 25 seconds left in the game.
  • Three missed buckets from West Florida left the score tied at 67-67, forcing overtime.
  • Chisholm opened extra time with a layup, giving Delta State its first lead, 69-67, since the early minutes of the game.
  • A PJ Davis layup with five seconds left tied the game at 76-76, forcing another overtime.
  • West Florida jumped out to a five-point lead in the second overtime before a pair of Davis free throws and a drained 3-pointer from Schmidt notched the score at 81-81.
  • A UWF three and a couple of made free throws gave the Argos the 86-82 lead with seven seconds left. West Florida claimed the win by a final, 86-82.
  • Schmidt led four Statesmen in double-figures with 29 points on 11-of-25 from the field, including 5-of-12 from 3-point range, and 2-of-3 from the line. Davis followed with 18 points, while Cotton chipped in 16 and Chisholm tacked on 10.
  • DSU shot 48.3 percent (29-of-60) from the field, 40.0 percent (8-of-20) from beyond the arc, and 64.0 percent (16-of-25) from the charity stripe.
     
Beyond the Numbers
  • The double overtime loss to West Florida marked the second overtime game of the season with the only other coming from an 87-85 double-overtime loss to LeMoyne-Owen College.
  • Devin Schmidt continues his streak to seven straight games scoring 15-plus points. The sophomore guard now has eighteen 15-plus games this season.
  • Freshman PJ Davis recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 boards.
  • DSU has lost five consecutive games.
  • The Green-and-White have not lost at UWF Field House since Jan. 7, 2012.
 
Who's Next
  • Delta State will make its final stop of the two-game road trip in Valdosta, Ga. on Saturday, Feb. 7. The Statesmen will take on the Blazers of Valdosta State at the Complex. Tipoff is slated for 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
