THE BASICS: CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Justin Vincent tossed 5.2 scoreless innings and
Brandon Cummins drove in three runs to lead Delta State University (5-9, 4-4 GSC) to a 10-0 win over Union University (3-18, 2-13 GSC) on Monday at Ferriss Field. Vincent struck out six and gave up just three hits while Cummins went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two-run home run.
HOW IT HAPPENED:- The Statesmen scored five runs, all with two outs, in the second to take a 5-0 lead. Landon Thibodeaux and Juan Rivera had RBI doubles, while Brandon Cummins belted a two-run home run in the inning.
- Jonathan Andrews and Cummins singled and scored on a Jacob Swiney two-run single in the fourth to extend the Statesmen lead to 7-0.
- Delta State added three more runs in the fifth to build its 10-0 lead. Rivera drew a bases loaded walk and the second run of the inning scored on a double play. Cummins drove in the third run on a single up the middle to score Thibodeaux, who doubled.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:- DSU AT THE PLATE: Cummins was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI; Jonathan Andrews was 2-for-3 with two run scored and an RBI; Matt Barrett was 2-for-4 as the only Statesmen with multiple hits;
- Swiney, Ben Pickard, Ethan Gill, Landon Thibodeaux and Rivera had hits for the Statesmen.
- Austin Orr, Jim Martin and Chaz Wilson collected the three hits for Union.
- The bottom four hitters in the Statesmen order went 6-for-11 with six runs scored and four RBIs.
- The Statesmen were 4-for-7 with runners in scoring position and drew a bases loaded walk in the process while Union had two runners in scoring position and was 0-for-4.
- Six-of-10 runs were scored with two outs.
- Justin Vincent (2-1) earned the win in his first career start for the Statesmen. The sophomore yielded no runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
- Skylar Nelson (1-4) took the loss for Union, giving up 10 runs, five earned, on 10 hits.
- Whitt Haggard came on in the sixth in relief of Vincent, recording three strikeouts in 1.1 innings.
- Delta State swept the Gulf South Conference series outscoring the Bulldogs 27-1 in three games.
