BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
– Delta State's PJ Davis was named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year on Monday, while Devin Schmidt was named First Team All-GSC.
 
Freshman forward PJ Davis of Cleveland, Miss. is averging 9.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game in his inaugural campaign. The local product collected a league-leading six GSC Freshman of the Week honors, recorded seven double-doubles and scored a career-high 18 points on Feb. 5 against West Florida. The 6-foot-5 freshman currently has 54 of the team's total 106 blocks.
 
Sevierville, Tenn. native Devin Schmidt earned First Team All-GSC honors for the second year in a row. Schmidt reached 1,000-career points this season in 58 games played over a two-year span. He has scored 15-plus points in 24 games out of the 28 games played this season and has only scored below double figures in three games. Schmidt tied his career-high 35 points against regular season champion Alabama-Huntsville on Feb. 12 and has scored 30-plus points in four games this season. The 6-foot-4 guard was named GSC Player of the Week a career high two times this season.
 
This marks the second consecutive year that the GSC Freshman of the Year laurel has gone to Delta State, with Schmidt taking the honor in 2013-14.
