LEADOFFThe Delta State University softball team (12-13, 3-8 GSC) will host the Wolves of West Georgia (12-19, 5-12) this weekend at University Field in Gulf South Conference action.
In the 2014 season, the Lady Statesmen and Wolves met four times, a three-game regular season series in Carrollton, Ga. and once in the GSC Tournament. DSU won the regular season battle by taking two games out of three and won the postseason matchup 4-0 in the conference tournament.
Delta State is coming off a three-loss weekend against No. 7 Alabama-Huntsville, while West Georgia is on a seven-game losing streak. The Wolves dropped a doubleheader series to Young Harris earlier this week and suffered the sweep of West Florida last weekend in Carrollton.
In conference standings, West Georgia holds the No. 5 spot, while DSU ranks 7th.
The Lady Statesmen rank fifth in the league in batting average with a .307. Senior
Amber Adcock leads the way for Delta State with a .478 batting average, second in the conference.
Six of the Green-and-White are batting over .300- Adcock (.478),
Kaitlin Moore (.383),
Kassidy Tally (.374),
Kory Watterson (.322),
Memrie Corley (.313), and
Kara Lane Nowell (.308).
Junior outfielder Moore is inching closer to the lead spot for career doubles at Delta State. The Southaven, Miss. native has 44 extra base hits in three years and ranks third in the DSU record book. Teammate Adcock is close behind with 43 career doubles. They are chasing Laura Simpson (1996-99) with 48.
Up next for the Green-and-White is midweek action against Arkansas-Monticello. The Lady Statesmen will take on the Cotton Blossoms on Tuesday, March 31 at University Field. First pitch of the doubleheader will be at 2 p.m.
