Statesmen Roar Back To Beat West Georgia, 13-12

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Catcher Matt Barrett went 4-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs to lead Delta State University (9-11, 8-6 GSC) to a 13-12 comeback win over the University of West Georgia (21-10, 14-7 GSC) on Sunday at Ferriss Field.  The Statesmen erased deficits of 7-3, and 12-7 to earn the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Delta State scored three runs in the first to build and early 3-0 lead. Ben Pickard and Colton Welch had RBI singles and another run scored on a double play.
  • The Statesmen loaded the bases with no outs in the second before a double play and a strikeout ended the inning.
  • West Georgia used a seven-run third to take a 7-3 lead. Dalton Rogers, Garrett Hayes and Artemis Kadkhodaian had RBI singles and Drew Eady delivered a two-run double to highlight the inning.
  • Delta State cut the deficit to 7-6 with a three-run fourth. Barrett belted a leadoff solo home run to make the score 7-4.  After a two-out throwing error by the Wolves, Jacob Swiney hit a two-run home run to left to cut the lead to 7-6.
  • The Green and White tied the game 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth on a Barrett solo home run.
  • Two singles and a pair of errors led to a five-run seventh for West Georgia. Sumner McWhorter had an RBI single and Hayes hit a grand slam to left centerfield to give the Wolves a 12-7 lead.
  • The Statesmen rallied for six runs in the seventh to take their first lead since the third inning. Pickard homered to start the inning followed by RBI singles by Thibodeaux and Barrett to cut the deficit to 12-10. Juan Rivera pinch hit for Jonathan Andrews and delivered an RBI single to left center and Cummins RBI single to right center tied the game, 12-12. Pickard's second at bat of the inning was a run-scoring single to centerfield to put the Statesmen ahead 13-12.
  • West Georgia loaded the bases with the ninth with two outs only to see Nick Goza strike out Keith Buckhault looking to end the game.  
  • Trevor Blocker (2-0) did not allow a run or hit in 1.1 innings to earn the win for the Statesmen. Nick Goza worked out of the bases loaded jam in the ninth to pick his third save.
  • Tyler Gunnin (1-1) gave up a run on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts to take the loss for West Georgia.

STAT OF THE GAME
  • Led by Barrett's two home runs, the Statesmen belted a season-high four home runs on the afternoon.  
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • The Statesmen won their third straight GSC series and it was the second comeback win for the Statesmen in the series.
  • The Statesmen's 16 hits tied a season-high and the 13 runs scored set a season-high in GSC play.
  • Delta State went 8-for-16 win runners in scoring position and were successful advancing the runners 17 out of 23 chances.
  • The win gave Statesmen skipper Mike Kinnison his 794 win, six away from 800 career victories.
