DSU's Late Rally Halted by Shorter

ROME, Georgia– A late comeback fell short for Delta State University men's basketball, as the Statesmen fell on the road to Shorter University 83-80. Four players recorded double-doubles, led by PJ Davis' 22 points.

    How It Happened
  • Neither team found its way on the scoreboard until Shorter sparked a 5-0 run at the 6:31 mark.
  • James Kilpatrick's 3-pointer coupled with Jack Madgen's jumper pulled the Statesmen within two points ,7-5,  with 15:56 to play in the first half.
  • Delta State's 3:40 scoring drought allowed Shorter to extend its lead to 14-5 and 12:42 to play.
  • Scoring was scarce for the Statesmen until their 3-point stroke came alive. John Cornish and Jack Madgen drained threes to inch within three, 21-18, with 6:25 to play before halftime.
  • The Green-and-White tied the game at 25-25 with just over two minutes left in the half on an old-fashion three-point play from Devin Schmidt.
  • Shorter went back up 30-28 40 seconds later and took a 35-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • PJ Davis' 3-point play along with a pair of made free throws at the 15:04 mark capped a 9-0 DSU run that gave the Statesmen he lead 43-41.
  • SU regained the lead moments later, and Delta State's game of catch up continued.
  • The Statesmen were never able to reach within more than three down the home stretch.
  • Shorter gained its largest lead of the night, 79-69, with 1:35 left on the game clock.
  • The game looked in the bag for the Hawks, but Delta State made it interesting by stringing together a 9-0 run to put the score 79-78 with 54 seconds left.
  • SU demolished the threat and took the win, 83-80.

    Notables
  • Davis led the Statesmen with a career-high tying 22 points. Schmidt followed with 19 points, Madgen with 13, and Morris with 12.
  • Schmidt added to his career-points total. He is now at 1,513 to remain in fifth on the all-time scoring list and needs 285 to be the new record holder.
  • Shorter snapped a four-game DSU win streak.

  • Delta State turned the ball over 13 times, allowing Shorter to score 20 points from miscues.

  • Delta State returns home for an in-state matchup with rival Mississippi College. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. and fans are encouraged to wear white.
