Lady Statesmen Set To Host Rival Mississippi College

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – No. 22 Delta State University (10-2, 7-2 GSC) women's basketball hosts Gulf South Conference and instate rival Mississippi College (4-9, 2-8 GSC) at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Lloyd Clark Court-Walter Sillers Coliseum.

  • Chelsey Rhodes scored 23 of her 28 points in the second half only to see Delta State's rally from a 27-point halftime deficit fall short in a 63-60 loss to Shorter.  Becca Ruckes chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds and Alondrea Rush and Anissa Jackson added nine apiece.
        
  • DSU's two losses are by a combined six points and on the road where the Lady Statesmen are 5-2 overall. The Lady Statesmen fell at West Florida (12.19.15), 57-54, and at Shorter (1.11.16), 63-60. 
        
  • Delta State is ranked No. 25 in this week's WBCA USA Today Top 25 and 16th in the D2SIDA Media Poll.
      
  • Lady Statesmen GSC Only Stats:  Scoring Defense (47.6 ppg./1st); FG % (44.7/1st); FG % Defense (34.7/2nd); 3FG % Defense (23.3/1st), FT % (77.3/2nd);   
        
  • Rhodes (20.4 ppg.), and Becca Ruckes (11.5 ppg.) are averaging in double figures in GSC contests. Rhodes has scored 20-plus points in three straight and five of 10 GSC contests this season, including  a 33-point effort against Christian Brothers (12.10.15).
        
  • The Lady Statesmen lead the GSC and NCAA in scoring defense (49.0 ppg.) and also lead the GSC  in field goal percentage defense (34.8) and 3-point field goal percentage defense (24.3).  The 24.3 3-point field goal percentage defense ranks third nationally.
        
  • Offensively, Delta State is shooting 42.5 percent (3rd GSC) from the floor and its 77.6 free throw percentage ranks second in the league.
        
  • Rhodes and Becca Ruckes are averaging a combined 32.0 of DSU's 61.8 points per game. Rhodes has scored in double figures in all 13 games this season and 17 of her last 18 games while Ruckes has put up double figures in 9-of-13 games this season. 
        
  • Freshman point guard Alondrea Rush dished out a career-high six assists and Rhodes had a career-high four steals against Shorter.
        
  • Delta State's 12 first half points and two second quarter points against Shorter were season lows. Shorter's 63 points marked the first time the Lady Statesmen allowed more than 59 points this season. 
     
  • The Lady Statesmen have won 12 straight home games dating back to a 74-69 overtime loss to West Florida (12.20.14). The Lady Statesmen are 6-0 overall and 4-0 at home  in the GSC.
