Lady Statesmen Claim Win over Mississippi College, 60-40

CLEVELAND, Miss.  – Anissa Jackson scored 12 points, while Aspriona Gilbert and Chelsey Rhodes added 11 points each to lead No. 25/16 Delta State University (11-2, 8-2 GSC) to a 60-40 win over Mississippi College (4-9, 2-8 GSC) on Saturday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

How It Happened
  • Mississippi College went on a 7-0 run to erase an early 4-0 deficit, taking a 7-4 lead on a Carla Clemmons basket with 5:35 remaining in the first quarter.
  • The Lady Statesmen ended the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 15-10 lead after a Mary Carol Davis layup with 28 seconds to go.
  • Chelsey Rhodes made two free throws and Kaelin Kneeland added another to give the Lady Statesmen a 20-12 advantage at the 7:10 mark of the second quarter.
  • Mississippi College shaved the lead to 22-21, but Delta State closed the first half on a 5-1 run to take a 27-22 lead at halftime.  
  • Delta State shot 26 percent in the half, while the Lady Choctaws shot 47 percent.
  • An Anissa Jackson basket gave the Lady Statesmen a 31-23 lead to start the third quarter.
  • The Lady Statesmen kept the lead between six and eight points until an 8-0 run gave DSU its largest lead, 45-31, heading to the final quarter.
  • Delta State took advantage of a 4:36 scoring drought by the Choctaws to build a 57-37 lead with 2:50 left in fourth quarter. Alondrea Rush connected on a 3-point field goal to cap a 10-0 run during the MC drought.

  • Jackson led the Lady Statesmen offense with 12 points along with five boards.
  • Gilbert scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the her first career start for the Lady Statesmen.
  • Rhodes scored 11 points and ranks 13th on the all-time scoring list with 1,45 points. The Monticello, Ark., native attempted four 3-point field goals and is second all-time in 3-point field goals attempted with 512.
  • Kneeland just missed her second double-double, scoring nine points and tying her career-high with 11 rebounds.
  • The Lady Statesmen defense limited the Lady Choctaws to 40 points, 25 points below their season average.
  • Delta State's 26.5 percent shooting from the field was a season low.
  • Kristen Sampson led MC with a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds.
