Rhodes Leads Lady Statesmen Past UWA

CLEVELAND, Miss.  – Chelsey Rhodes scored 24 points to lead Delta State University (13-2, 10-2 GSC)  to a 62-45 Gulf South Conference win over the University West Alabama (5-11, 2-10 GSC) on Thursday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

How It Happened
  • West Alabama held a couple of one-point leads in the first quarter but endured droughts of 3:02 and 3:41.
  • The first quarter saw five lead changes before the Lady Statesmen went on a 6-0 run to build a 13-8 lead on a Chelsey Rhodes jump shot at the buzzer.
  • UWA cut the deficit to 19-18 only to see the Lady Statesmen go on a 12-0 run to take a 31-18 lead after a Becca Ruckes basket with 1:54 remaining in the second quarter.
  • The Lady Statesmen connected on 9-of-11 free throws during their 12-0 run.
  • West Alabama's Ariel Wilson connected on a 3-point field goal at the buzzer to cut the Green-and-White lead to 32-23 at halftime.
  • An 11-0 run combined with a 4:49 UWA scoring drought gave the Lady Statesmen a 43-28 lead with 4:32 left in the third quarter.
  • The Lady Statesmen held a 50-36 lead at the end of the third quarter.

  • Rhodes scored 24 points and ranks 13th on the all-time scoring list with 1,501 points. Rhodes needs five points to pass Camelia Ward (1,505 points/1975-78). The Monticello, Ark., native went 2-of-8 from three point land and has now made 175-of-528 3-pointers in her career, ranking second and third, respectively.
  • Delta State is 8-0 at home this season and has won 14 straight home games, dating back to a 74-69 overtime loss to West Florida (12.20.14).
