Statesmen to Host CBU and Union for Senior Day

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State men's soccer team will seek its second Gulf South Conference win when it hosts Christian Brothers University on Friday, Oct. 14, at 3 p.m., and Union University on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. at Delta Field. Sunday's match against Union will be Senior Day as well as "Sunday Fun Day," which will include games and activities for attendees. 
 
INSIDE THE SERIES: 
  • Christian Brothers lead the series 14-3-1 against Delta State. This will be the 19th meeting between the two schools.
  • The Statesmen lost 1-0 at CBU last season.
  • DSU is currently 3-5-1 in its series with Union.
  • In the last meeting between the two teams, Delta State shutout Union 2-0 in Jackson, Tenn.
 
ABOUT DSU:  
  • The Statesmen are currently 5-7 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.
  • DSU's scoring offense currently ranks fourth in the GSC. The Statesmen rank seventh in assists per game averaging 1.09 and fourth in points per game in the GSC with 4.73.
  • The Statesmen have scored 21 goals on the season and are averaging 1.75 goals per game.
  • They enter Friday's match coming off a 3-0 win against Concordia College (Ala.).
  • Ricardo Filho leads the Statesmen offense with five goals and 10 points. He ranks 10th in points and eighth in goals in the GSC.
  • Connor Hogg is second on the team with two goals and two assists in nine games played.
  • Peyton Marter leads the team with three assists and Brock Hollier is close behind with two.
  • Freshman Zachary Breaux has made an impact on the pitch starting in the last six of seven matches and scoring two goals in 10 games played.
  • In goal for the Statesmen, Jacob Hauenstein recorded two shutouts last weekend against Ouachita Baptist University and Concordia College (Ala.), making a total of eight saves.
 
ABOUT CHRISTIAN BROTHERS:
  • The Buccaneers are 5-5 overall and 1-4 in GSC play.
  • In 10 games, CBU has found the back of the net 16 times, which ranks eighth in the GSC. CBU is averaging 15 shots per game.
  • On the road they are 1-1 and average 1.6 goals per game.
  • Xavi Lao and Brendan Bennett are leading the Buccaneers offense. Lao has six goals, 37 shots (19 on goal) and 12 points. Bennett has four goals and one assist, 16 shots (nine on goal) and nine points on the season thus far.
  • In goal, Ricardo Lao has made 10 starts and enters play with 28 saves, allowing 15 goals in the back of the net.   
 
ABOUT UNION:
  • Union is currently 4-8 and 2-4 in the GSC.
  • The Bulldogs are averaging 12 shots per game and 1.25 goals per game.
  • Paul Langford, Cole Asfour and Joel Ronkko lead the offense. Langford has four goals and one assist, 22 shots (11 on goal) and nine points. Asfour has three goals, three assists, 17 shots (11 on goal) and nine points. Ronkko has  two goals, five shots (all on goal) and four points.
  • Rodrigo Zonta leads the team with four assists and ranks fourth in the GSC.
  • In goal, Igor Luczensky has seen the most recent action and enters play with 39 saves and 15 goals allowed. He leads the conference in saves per game with 5.57.
 
UP NEXT: The Statesmen will be on the road for a pair of GSC matches. The first stop is Rome, Ga., to face Shorter University on Friday, Oct. 21. Kickoff will be at 6:30 p.m. The final stop of the weekend will be in Cleveland, Tenn., against Lee University on Sunday, Oct. 23. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
