Comeback Effort Falls Short for Statesmen, 85-79

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – Trailing by as many as 24 points in the first half, Delta State University's comeback effort fell short, 85-79, despite a game-high 29 points from junior Devin Schmidt.

    How It Happened
  • The Statesmen offense struggled to get going in the opening minutes of the contest, as Huntsville mounted a 9-0 run out of the gate and extended that into a 28-6 edge at the 9:51 mark.
  • Facing a 23-point deficit with 6:20 to play in the first half, Delta State ignited a furious comeback, outscoring the Chargers 17-7 in the closing six minutes of the half. Over the span, Devin Schmidt scored eight points, while Jack Madgen poured in five points and PJ Davis and Brett Warner added two each. The Green-and-White charge closed the gap to 38-25 at halftime.
  • DSU's comeback effort carried over into second-half play, as the Statesmen rallied back within four points, 47-43, on a Davis layup with 16:15 to go.
  • Huntsville went back up by as many as 13 points before Schmidt and Warner's 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions pulled the Statesmen within two, 67-65.
  • In DSU's next trip down the court, James Kilpatrick used a layup at the 5:43 mark to tie the game at 67-67.
  • Delta State took its first lead of the game, 72-71, on a Warner 3-pointer with 4:28 left on the game clock.
  • The lead changed hands three times over the next four minutes, but the Chargers went up for good, 82-77, on a couple of UAH free throws with 21 seconds left.
  • Huntsville executed at the free throw line in the final seconds to pick up the 85-79 win.

  • The Statesmen rallied back from a 24-point deficit in the first half.
  • Schmidt led all scorers and three Statesmen in double figures with 29 points. Kilpatrick tied his career-high 14 points, while Jack Madgen added 13 points.
  • A native of Sevierville, Tennessee, Schmidt now has 1,699 career points to remain in third place on the all-time scoring list at Delta State. He needs 101 points to take over as the all-time leading scorer at Delta State with four regular season games left.
  • The Green-and-White outscored the Chargers 54-47 in the second half.
  • Delta State has not won at Spragins Hall since an 86-76 win on Dec. 21, 2013.
