Boone Wins 500th in 71-65 Win over Lee on Senior Day

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Head Coach Jim Boone earned his 500th career win in Delta State University's 71-65 victory over Lee University on Saturday. Jack Madgen, Zelvin Smith and Declan Harrick were honored for Senior Day.

    How It Happened
  • Lee scored the first basket of the night at the 19:50 mark to take the 2-0 lead. The score was tied once, but the Flames maintained the advantage over the next seven minutes.
  • Devin Schmidt's layup notched the score at 15-14 with 10:09 left in the first half. That was DSU's last lead until the second half.
  • The Flames took their largest lead of the night, 13, on a Chase Cullen fastbreak dunk at the 3:13 mark, giving LU the 32-19 advantage.
  • Delta State trailed Lee 36-27 at halftime.
  • Lee held the momentum through the start of second-half action. The Statesmen were down by 12, 45-33, with 14:51 remaining on the clock before they mounted a comeback.
  • The Green-and-White sparked a 10-1 run, capped off by a pair of Jack Madgen free throws at the 7:05 mark that gave Delta State its first lead, 51-10, since the first half. DSU never lost the lead again.
  • A Schmidt 3-pointer gave Delta State its largest lead of the game, 67-55, with 1:27 left on the game clock.
  • The Statesmen went on to win 71-65.

    Notables
  • Schmidt led all scorers with his ninth 30-point game of the season, dropping 35 points. PJ Davis joined Schmidt in double figures with 10 points for his sixth double-figure performance in seven games.
  • A junior guard, Schmidt moved into second place on the all-time scoring list at Delta State, passing Sammy Little (1966-69) with 1,781 career points. The Sevierville, Tenn., native now has 1,795 points and needs five to become the all-time leading scorer.
  • Head Coach Jim Boone tallied his 500th career win in the victory over Lee. The Winfield, W.V., native is in his 30th season as a head coach and has had coaching stints at Div. 1 and II schools: California (PA), Robert Morris, Eastern Michigan, Tusculum and West Virginia Wesleyan.
