Delta State men's hoops picked up two crucial wins over Shorter (86-71) and Lee (71-65) last week to keep the hopes alive of earning a top four seed in the GSC and hosting on Super Tuesday (March 1). The field will be set for the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament after the completion of conference play on Saturday, Feb. 27.
In their first meeting on Jan. 16, the Statesmen and Choctaws met at Walter Sillers Coliseum and saw DSU win 80-53.
Devin Schmidt led all scorers 20 points.
Terry Morris and
James Kilpatrick tied their career highs, with 14 points each. MC's Tory Rice led the Choctaws with 16 points. Delta State recorded tied a season-high 49 rebounds in the contest.
PJ Davis is starting to turn up his offensive intensity. The sophomore has scored in double figures in six of DSU's last seven games and 15 total this season.
Schmidt, a 6-foot-4 guard moved into second place on the all-time scoring list at Delta State with 35 points against Lee on Saturday. He has 1,795 career points and needs five points to become the all-time leading scorer to pass Carl Brown (1983-86), who has held the record for 30 years. Schmidt is averaging 25.3 points per game to rank second in the league and South Region, fourth in Div. II and first in Mississippi.
The Statesmen entered the first South Region Poll at No. 8 last week. They were one of four GSC teams listed in the top 10.
Head Coach
Jim Boone picked up his 500th career win in DSU's 71-65 upend of Lee. The Winfield, W.V., native is in his 30th season as a head coach with coaching stints at Div. 1 and II schools: California (PA), Robert Morris, Eastern Michigan, Tusculum and West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Green-and-White maintain the top spot in a majority of the defensive categories in the league: scoring defense (66.7 ppg), field goal percentage defense (40.8%), rebounding offense (39.5 rpg) and rebounding defense (32.1 rpg).
