Schmidt Ignites Comeback Win Over Blazers 72-67

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Devin Schmidt's career-high 37 points and record-breaking performance ignited Delta State University's come-from-behind win over Valdosta on Thursday night.

    How It Happened
  • A close, physical contest featured six lead changes and two ties over the first 16:08 with the deficit ranging from one to five for each team.
  • Valdosta earned the first significant lead of the contest, going ahead of the Statesmen 24-23 at the 4:42 mark on a Blake Justice 3-pointer.
  • The Blazers used a Chris Bilbo buzzer-beating 3-pointer to take a 38-29 lead into the locker room.
  • Delta State slowly began to chip away at the lead out of the break, using a 7-0 run to close within two, 38-36.
  • VSU answered back with a 9-2 run to extend its lead back out to eight, 54-46, with 9:41 to go in the contest.
  • The Green-and-White then ignited for a 19-3 run over a span of 7:18, highlighted by 11 points from Devin Schmidt. Delta State used the run to take a commanding 65-57 edge with 2:23 remaining on the game clock.
  • DSU used free throws from Schmidt and Terry Morris in the closing 48 seconds and went on to defeat the Blazers 72-67 to avenge a December road loss in Valdosta, Georgia.

    Notables
  • Schmidt ignited for 22 points in the second half and ended the game with a new career-high 37 points. Sophomore PJ Davis recorded his third double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 boards.
  • Schmidt now has 1,670 career points to remain in third place on the all-time scoring list at Delta State. The Sevierville, Tennessee, native is now the record holder for threes made (196) and attempted (493). He passed DSU Hall of Famer Twentis Magee (1995-98) in both categories, going 5-for-13 from downtown against Valdosta.
  • The Statesmen sought and found redemption against the Blazers after falling in Valdosta, Georgia, at The Complex, 62-52, on Dec. 17.
  • Head coach Jim Boone needs two wins to reach 500 career victories.
