Giambrone Leads Statesmen Past Muleriders 5-4

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Delta State University's pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts, coupled with a 3-for-5, two-RBI night from Trent Giambrone allowed the Statesmen (14-9) to pick up a 5-4 win over Southern Arkansas University (14-9) on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Muleriders were the first to strike, scoring four runs on four hits in the top of the second inning to take a 4-0 lead.
  • Will Robertson and Ethan Gill connected on back-to-back RBI doubles in the bottom of the third, cutting the lead in half, 4-2.
  • In their next at-bat, the Statesmen continued to chip away at the deficit. The speedy Robertson beat out a potential double play that allowed Erick Santiago to score from third to cut the lead to 4-3.
  • Trent Giambrone's second hit of the night came in the form of an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the sixth. Matt Barrett scored, tying the game at four all.
  • A senior from Metairie, La., Giambrone used his second two-out RBI hit of the night when he singled through the hole at shortstop to score Santiago, giving the Statesmen their first lead of the game, 5-4.
  • Jake Brumfield struck out the side in the top of the ninth to pick up his third win in relief.
     
BEYOND THE BOXSCORES
  • Giambrone used two two-out RBI hits to score the tying and winning runs. He finished the night 3-for-5 with two RBIs and has six multiple-RBI games this season.
  • The Statesmen pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts, tying their season-high set against Arkansas-Monticello on March 2.
  • Delta State is now 5-2 against Great American Conference opponents and 5-3 in one-run games.
  • The Green-and-White offense scored five unanswered runs following a four-run inning by the Muleriders in the top of the second. DSU's pitching staff held SAU to four hits over six innings, since the fourth inning.
