Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Union

JACKSON, Tennessee – Junior Tre Hobbs continued his dominance on the hill for Delta State University, picking up the 5-3 win in game two after the Statesmen dropped game one 8-7 to Union University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
  • Delta State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning with RBIs from Trent Giambrone and Jacob Swiney.
  • The Bulldogs responded with a lone run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Zach Wylie, notching the score at 4-1.
  • Will Robertson's two-RBI double to left field scored Giambrone and Brandon Cummins to give the Statesmen a little cushion, 6-1, in the top of the fourth.
  • Union's Ryne Roper singled up the middle in the bottom of the fifth, plating Tyler Mauzy and making the score 6-2.
  • Colton Welch reached on an error by the shortstop to score Ethan Gill in the top of the seventh, giving DSU the 7-2 advantage.
  • After an RBI single by Union's Roper in the eighth, the score stood at 7-5 in favor of the Statesmen with one inning to play.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, the Bulldogs scored one run on a Charlie Ellis RBI single to come within one, 7-6. Union went on to win in walk-off fashion, 8-7, when Mauzy's single to centerfield plated two runs.
     
GAME TWO
  • Each team scored a single run in its first at-bats to deadlock the score at 1-1 after one complete inning.
  • Cummins led off the top of the third with a home run, his first of the season, to put DSU back up 2-1.
  • UU's Wylie tied it up, 2-2, for the second time of the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on a fielding error.
  • The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth, 3-2, when Roper reached on a fielder's choice and Mauzy scored on a DSU error.
  • Delta State tacked on three runs in its last at-bat in the top of the seventh, to regain a 5-3 lead. Welch launched his fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot, and Giambrone flew out to right field, deep enough to score Matt Barrett from third.
  • Union brought four batters to the plate in the bottom of the seventh but left a runner on base, falling to the Statesmen 5-3.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORES
  • Cummins was the only Statesmen to record a hit in both games.
  • Junior Tre Hobbs (5-0) remains undefeated in the Green-and-White and has pitched three straight complete games, giving up three runs, one earned, on seven hits against the Bulldogs in game two. Hobbs has struck out at least five batters in four of his five outings.
  • Delta State has split in every doubleheader to start a series this season and is 3-1 in the deciding series finales.
  • The Statesmen snapped an 11-game winning streak against the Bulldogs with the 8-7 loss in game one.
