Statesmen Power Past MVSU, 12-4

CLEVELAND, Miss.Ethan Gill, Trent Giambrone and Ben Pickard each belted two-run home runs to lead Delta State University (26-11) to a 12-4 win over Mississippi Valley State University (4-23) on Tuesday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Delta State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ben Pickard was hit by a pitch and later stole home on a double steal with two outs.
  • Will Robertson led off the fourth with a single and scored on an Ethan Gill home run to left, extending the lead to 3-0.
  • The Statesmen added a run in the sixth to build the lead to 4-0. Robertson singled and came home on Colton Welch's ninth double of the season.
  • Mississippi Valley State tied the game in the top of the seventh. Cole Gullette's RBI single cut the deficit to 4-1. After a run scored on a wild pitch, Drew Wheeler tied the game on a two-run double.
  • Trent Giambrone and Ben Pickard belted two-run home runs in the seventh to help the Statesmen take an 8-4 lead.
  • DSU pushed four runs across in the eighth to take a 12-4 lead. Robertson had a two-run double followed by a Gill RBI single and a Dakota Glore sacrifice fly.
  • Trevor Blocker (2-0) scattered four hits over two innings with three strikeouts for the win.
  • Arrington Smith (1-7) surrendered eight runs, seven earned, on 11 hits with two strikeouts to suffer the loss for the Delta Devils.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Robertson's two-run double in the eighth was his 23rd of the season, putting the junior three shy of breaking DSU's single-season record of 25. The record is currently held by current DSU Head Coach Mike Kinnison (1978), Dee Haynes (1999) and Edwin Maysonet (2003).
  • Giambrone and Pickard's home runs in the eighth were their team-leading eighth home runs this season.
  • Gill has reached base in 21 straight games with his 3-for-5 performance.
  • Giambrone's two RBIs and Gill's three RBIs marked their 10th multi-RBI games this season
  • Welch had three hits to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
  • Osbon made his first career start on the mound. His six strikeouts and five innings pitched were career highs.
  • Junior Andrew Bryan made his first start behind the plate for the Statesmen.
  • The Statesmen improved to 81-15 all-time against the Delta Devils.
  • Head Coach Mike Kinnison now has 837 career victories with the doubleheader sweep.

Delta State hosts No. 16/23 University of West Florida for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m. at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field. The series concludes with a single game on Sunday, April 17 at 1 p.m. and will determine who takes over first place in the Gulf South Conference.
