No. 12 Statesmen Split With No. 17/23 UWF

CLEVELAND, Miss. – No. 12 Delta State University (28-12, 19-7 GSC) claimed a 6-3 win in the night cap to split a doubleheader with No. 17/23 University of West Florida (27-12, 19-7 GSC) on Saturday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field. West Florida worked out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth to hold on for a 7-6 win in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • West Florida got two runs in the first and a run in the second to take an early 3-0 lead. Jean Figueroa had a sacrifice fly, and Ledeavon Matthews picked up an RBI single in the first. Justin Ambrosino delivered an RBI single in the second.
  • The Statesmen cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth. Trent Giambrone led off with a double and scored on an Ethan Gill single. Gill later came home on a Colton Welch single to right center.
  • West Florida added a run on an error in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 4-2.
  • The Statesmen used a four-run sixth to take a 6-4 lead. Jacob Swiney singled in two runs followed by a Dakota Glore RBI double. The final run of the inning was scored on a ground out.
  • The Argos grabbed a 7-6 lead in the seventh when Jimmy Redovian belted a three-run home run.
  • The Statesmen had the tying run in scoring position in the seventh and loaded the bases in the ninth but could not plate a run.
  • Dalton Moats (7-3) suffered the loss for the Statesmen, allowing seven runs, six earned, on six hits with four strikeouts.
  • Jarrod Petree (4-1) picked up the win for UWF in relief of the starter Walker O'Connor. Petree scattered three hits over 2.2 scoreless innings.
  • Steven McClellan worked a scoreless ninth to record his sixth save.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • Giambrone singled and scored on a Robertson double to give the Statesmen an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Matt Barrett belted a leadoff solo home run to extend the lead to 2-0 in the third.
  • West Florida tied the game at 2-2 on a two-run single by Matthews in the fourth.
  • The Statesmen answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Welch hit a two-run home run and Erick Santiago launched a solo home run with two outs.
  • Green doubled to lead off the fifth and scored on an Ambrosino single to cut the DSU lead to 5-3.
  • Delta State got the run back in the fifth to take a 6-3 edge. Giambrone stole third and came home on a throwing error when the UWF catcher tried to throw out Robertson, who stole second.
  • Tre Hobbs (10-1) allowed three runs on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout in seven innings to earn the win.
  • Brandon Nagem (5-2) suffered the loss for UWF, yielding six runs, five earned, on eight hits through five innings of work.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORES
  • The Statesmen had 14 hits in game one and have recorded double digit hits in 13 of their last 17 games.
  • Swiney's two RBIs in game one marked his ninth two-RBI performance this season.
  • Hobbs notched his GSC and NCAA leading 10th win and his GSC-leading eighth complete game.
  • Robertson's double in the first inning increased his season total to 24, one shy of the DSU single-season record and eight away from the GSC single-season record (32).
  • Welch's two-run home run in the fourth was his sixth of the season and moved him into second on the team. The home run also extended his hitting streak to 16 games.His two RBIs marked his fourth two-RBI outing of the season.
  • Barrett's solo home run in the third was his second on the year.
  • Santiago's home run in the fourth was his third this season.
  • The Statesmen fell to 6-4 in one-run games this season, but improved to 5-1 after losing game one and 10-1 overall in game two contests.
  • Delta State leads the overall series with West Florida 30-27 after the doubleheader.
  • Head Coach Mike Kinnison now has 838 career victories with the doubleheader sweep.
