Diamond Statesmen Win Two Against Blazers

CLEVELAND, Miss. – No. 15 Delta State University (32-13, 21-8 GSC) swept a doubleheader from
Valdosta State University (24-17, 15-12 GSC) by the scores of 7-2 and 7-4 on Saturday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field. Tre Hobbs picked up his 11th win of the season, tying him for seventh in the DSU record book.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)
  • The Blazers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Jaykob Graham.
  • Delta State struck for five runs in the sixth inning to erase the two-run deficit and take a 5-2 lead. An Ethan Gill three-run home run coupled with RBI singles from Trent Giambrone and Will Robertson provided the spark for the Statesmen.
  • A Giambrone RBI double and Robertson delivered an RBI single to extend the Statesmen lead 7-2 in the seventh.
  • Dalton Moats (8-3) yielded two runs on five hits and recorded seven strikeouts through nine innings to earn the complete-game win, his fourth of the season.
  • Mitchell Cody (5-4) took the loss for the Blazers, giving up six runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched.
                                   
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2)
  • Ben Pickard reached on an error and Trent Giambrone doubled to start a two-run second. Erick Santiago's two-run single put the Statesmen ahead 2-0 in the second inning.
  • The Statesmen added two more runs in the third to push the lead to 4-0. Ben Pickard and Robertson had run-scoring singles to highlight the inning.
  • Matt Barrett launched a two-run home run in the fourth to make the score 6-0. The home run was Barrett's third of the season.
  • Chipper Andzel's RBI single got the Blazers on the board in the top of the fifth, cutting the lead to 6-1.
  • Barrett drew a walk and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Statesmen a 7-1 lead in the sixth inning.
  • Valdosta State plated three runs with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh. Jake Brumfield recorded a strikeout with the bases loaded and two outs to record his third save.
  • Santiago, Pickard and Cummins had two RBIs apiece in game two.
  • Tre Hobbs (11-1) struck out four and allowed four runs, one earned, on nine hits to earn the win.
  • Kellan Bailey (6-5) gave up seven runs, five earned with three walks and a strikeout as the pitcher of record for Valdosta State.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORES
  • Hobbs 11th victory moved him into a tie for seventh on the DSU single season wins list with nine other Statesmen, most recently Aaron Newcomb (2012).  
  • The Statesmen had 12 hits in game one and 11 in game two which marked 28 games with double-digit hits this season.
  • Robertson drove in three runs in the doubleheader and has a team-high 62 RBIs. The Falkner, Miss., native had two RBIs in game one for his 19th multi-RBI game
  • Giambrone's double in the sixth inning of game one put him one double away from moving into a tie for sixth on the DSU single-season doubles list.
  • Gill's three-run home run was his sixth, tying him with Colton Welch and Robertson for second on the team.
  • The Statesmen improved to 24-6 when scoring first.
  • The two wins give Delta State a 20-19 lead in the all-time series against the Blazers.
  • Statesmen Head Coach Mike Kinnison has 842 career wins after the doubleheader sweep.
