Statesmen Split With MC On Senior Day

CLEVELAND, Miss. – No. 12 Delta State University (34-15, 23-10 GSC) split a doubleheader on Senior Day with Mississippi College (17-30, 6-26 GSC) to close out 2016 regular season on Sunday, May 1 at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.  The Statesmen captured game one, 23-6, to secure the No. 2 seed in the 2016 Gulf South Conference Tournament on May 7-10 in Pensacola, Fla., before dropping game two, 6-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
  • Will Robertson hit a three-run home run and Erick Santiago had a two-run double to give the Statesmen a 5-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Mississippi College answered with five runs in the second to tie the game, 5-5. Hunter Hall's two-run double and Logan Farrell's game-tying RBI single highlighted the inning.
  • The Statesmen struck for three runs in the third to take an 8-5 lead. Juwan Burney's RBI single put the Statesmen ahead and Brandon Cummins followed with a two-run triple.
  • Santiago singled in two runs in the fourth to push the Statesmen's lead to 10-5.
  • A Cummins lead off solo home run and a two run triple highlighted a nine-run fifth as the Statesmen built a 19-5 lead.
  • Mississippi College got a run back in the top of the sixth on a Hall RBI single to cut the lead to 19-6
  • Delta State added four runs in the sixth to push the lead to 23-6.
  • Tre Hobbs (12-1) earned the win for the Statesmen, yielding five runs on eight hits with a strikeout in five innings pitched.
  • Samuel Harrison (3-6) gave up 10 runs, six earned, on 12 hits with a strikeout through four innings as the pitcher of record for MC.
  • Cummins and Robertson had four hits and five RBIs apiece to lead the Statesmen. Erick Santiago had four hits and drove in four runs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
  • Caleb Upton's three-run home run in the first inning helped the Choctaws take an early 3-0 lead.
  • Cummins singled and scored on an Ethan Gill single to cut the MC lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the first.
  • Mississippi College scored three runs in the second to extend the lead to 6-1 lead. Two runs scored on a bases loaded walks and another run came home on a Blaine Crim RBI single.
  • A Welch sac fly cut DSU's deficit to 6-2 in the fifth.
  • Gill went 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Statesmen in game two.
  • Tommy Taborda (2-4) picked up the win for the Choctaws in relief of starter Matt Payne. Taborda worked 2.2 innings allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout.
  • Justin Vincent (4-4) took the loss for the Statesmen, allowing gave six runs on six hits in 1.1 innings.
  • Jacob Howell worked inning in relief Vincent, working four innings with six strikeouts while allowing no runs on four hits.
 
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORES
  • The game one win secured the Statesmen the number two seed in the 2016 Gulf South Conference Tournament.
  • Cummins' two triples in game one was his GSC leading eighth and he is now tied for first on the DSU single season triples list with Brett Donahoo (2005) and Edwin Maysonet (2002). The triples give Cummins 13 career triples moving into second all-time, one behind career leader Tim Harvey (14).
  • Robertson notched his 32nd multi-hit game and 22nd multi-RBI game while Cummins recorded his 20th multi-hit game and third five RBI outing in game one.
  • Game one saw six different Statesmen record multiple RBIs (Robertson, Cummins, Giambrone, Welch, Santiago and Burney).
  • With his five RBIs in game one, Robertson moves into 10th place all-time in the single season record book at Delta State with 69.
  • Hobbs claimed win number 12 in game one to into a tie for sixth with five other Statesmen for wins in a single year.
  • The Statesmen had 22 hits in game one which marked 31 games with double-digit hits this season.
  • Delta State leads the all-time series with the Choctaws 106-29-1.
  • Delta State has won 20 of their last 21 GSC home series dating back to 2012.
