Statesmen Win 13th GSC Title Over UAH, 3-1

PENSACOLA, Fla.  – The No. 15 Delta State University (38-15) baseball team claimed its 13th Gulf South Conference Tournament championship with a 3-1 win over the University of Alabama Huntsville (33-20) in the GSC Tournament on Tuesday at Jim Spooner Field. Trent Giambrone was named the GSC Tournament's Most Outstanding Player while teammates Ben Pickard, Erick Santiago and Justin Vincent earned All-Tournament Team honors.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen took a 2-0 lead in the second, when Erick Santiago doubled home Jacob Swiney and later scored on a Matt Barrett RBI single.
  • Brandon Cummins' RBI single in the fourth brought Santiago around to score, which gave DSU a 3-0 lead.
  • UAH plated its lone run of the game, after Wright Hackett singled to start the seventh and advanced to third on a passed ball and wild pitch, then scored on a Michael Fox single.
  • Santiago and Giambrone had two hits apiece while Cummins, Ethan Gill and Colton Welch each had hits for the Statesmen.
  • Jacob Howell worked 2.2 innings with three strikeouts to record his third save this season.
  • Corey Beard (2-1) pitched 5.2 innings of scoreless baseball, scattering two hits with two strikeouts.
  • Riley Camp (1-1) gave up three runs on eight hits as the pitcher of record for the Chargers.
 
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Statesmen won their record 13th GSC title and sixth under Head Coach Mike Kinnison, while going through the tournament undefeated for the first time since 2003.
  • DSU won its second GSC title in five years and have played on championship day for the fifth straight year.
  • Trent Giambrone was named the GSC Tournament Most Outstanding Player while fellow Statesmen Ben Pickard, Erick Santiago and Justin Vincent earned GSC All-Tournament honors.
  • Giambrone went 2-for-4 on the afternoon and finished the tournament hitting .650 with a double, a home run and six RBIs.
  • Delta State won its eighth straight game against the Chargers, improving to 10-3 in GSC Tournament games and 39-20-1 all-time. Delta State and Alabama Huntsville have played for the GSC Championship three times in the last five years.
  • Statesmen Head Coach Mike Kinnison now has 848 career victories and is 53-32 in GSC Tournament games.
