Statesmen Stay Alive With 13-5 Win over UWG

TAMPA, Fla.  – Brandon Cummins, Trent Giambrone and Dakota Glore had two RBIs apiece to help No. 14 Delta State University (41-16) stay alive in the NCAA South Region tournament with a 13-5 win over the University of West Georgia (42-16), on Sunday at the Tampa Baseball Complex. The Statesmen advanced to take on Nova Southeastern at 11 a.m. (CDT) in the championship round on Monday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Delta State scored a run in the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 lead. Brandon Cummins belted his fourth home run of the season to leadoff the game and Dakota Glore had an RBI double in the second.
  • The Statesmen added three runs in the fourth make the score 5-0. Ethan Gill led the inning off with a home run and Ben Pickard singled and scored when Dakota Glore reached on a fielder's choice. Glore later scored on a wild pitch.
  • West Georgia cut the deficit to 5-4 with a four-run fifth. Cade Marlowe and Dalton Rogers each had a two-RBI singles and Garrett Hayes had an RBI single.
  • The Statesmen answered with a two-run sixth to extend the lead to 7-4. Robertson drove in a run with a single and another run crossed the plate on a ground out.
  • Delta State scored a run in the seventh and two in the eighth to increase the lead to 10-4, as Pickard doubled and scored on a double play in the seventh, while Robertson and Pickard had sac-fly RBIs in the eighth.
  • West Georgia scored its final run in the eighth on a Drew Eady RBI single to make the score 10-5.
  • Cummins and Giambrone had RBI singles to highlight a three-run ninth to finish the scoring.
  • Jacob Howell (1-3) earned the win for the Statesmen, allowing one run on four hits in three innings of relief.
  • Tritt Fennell (2-4) took the loss for the Wolves, allowing seven runs, three earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts over 5.1 innings.
  • DSU starter Zach Osbon worked 4.2 innings allowing four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.
 
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Gill's third inning home run was his ninth of the season, tying Ben Pickard and Trent Giambrone for the team lead. 
  • Robertson had two RBIs to tie Craig Newton (2005), and Jud Thigpen (2003) for fifth on the DSU single season RBIs list with 76. Robertson also collected two hits for his 33rd multi-hit game and two RBIs for his 23rd multi-RBI outing this season.
  • Pickard collected two hits for his 24th multi-hit game and Gill had two hits for his 17th multi-hit outing.
  • Delta State has won four straight games to lead the all-time series against West Georgia 22-7. The meeting was the first in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Giambrone drove in two runs for his 15th multi-RBI game and his two hits marked his 28th multi-hit contest.
  • The Green-and-White recorded their 36th double-digit hit game this season after recording 14 hits against the Wolves.
  • Statesmen Head Coach Mike Kinnison now has 851 career victories and improved to 42-25 in NCAA tournament games.
