TAMPA, Fla. – No. 11 Nova Southeastern University (39-16) built a 3-0 lead and rode the wave of strong pitching to a 3-1 win over No. 14 Delta State University (42-17) in the championship game of the NCAA South Region tournament on Monday at the Tampa Baseball Complex.
Ben Pickard's two-run single in the fourth combined with a complete game, nine strikeout, performance from
Dalton Moats helped the Statesmen claim a 3-1 win in game one to force the if necessary contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
- Nova Southeastern opened the scoring in the bottom of the fifth, when Sebastian Diaz walked and scored on a Jancarlos Cintron single to right.
- Three runs crossed the plate in the sixth to give the Statesmen a 3-1 lead. Brandon Cummins scored from third when Will Robertson reached on an error and Ben Pickard followed with a two-RBI single to center.
- After two Dalton Moats strikeouts, the Sharks put a runner on base with a walk before a fly out ended the game.
- Moats (12-3) tossed a complete game with nine strikeouts, while allowing one run, and scattering six hits to earn the win.
- Loret de Mola (6-3) allowed two runs on five hits with two strikeouts as the pitcher of record for the Sharks.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Championship Game)
- Nova Southeastern scored a run in second and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead, as Daniel Zardon hit a solo home run to left in the second and Kevin Suarez had an RBI single in the third.
- The Sharks pushed a across a run in the fifth to extend their lead to 3-0, when Suarez singled and later scored on a hit-and-run single by Andres Visbal.
- Delta State scored its lone run in the sixth, when Erick Santiago, who led off with a double and moved to third on a one out single by Trent Giambrone, scored on a fly ball by Will Robertson that was caught at the left field wall.
- Devin Raftery retired the final 10 batters over the last 3.2 innings with five strikeouts to record his 13th save. For his efforts, Raftery was named the NCAA South Region Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
- NSU starter Jonny Ortiz (6-3) earned the win, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts.
- Tre Hobbs (13-2) took the loss, yielding three runs on nine hits, with a walk, as the pitcher of record for the Statesmen.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Dalton Moats (P), Ben Pickard (C), Colton Welch (1B) and Brandon Cummins (OF) were selected to the NCAA South Region All-Tournament team.
- Moats recorded nine strikeouts in game one to move past Jeff Gregg (110/1994) for fourth on the DSU single season strikeout list with 115.
- Moats recorded nine plus strikeouts for the sixth time this season, and his 12th win moved him into a tie for sixth on the DSU single season wins list. Moats and Hobbs are the first duo to earn double-digit victories since Josh Barton (12), Brad Lightsey (11) and Matt McAlpine (10) in 2004.
- Pickard's two RBIs in game one marked his 16th multi-RBI game this season.
- Robertson's RBI in the sixth moved him ahead of Craig Newton (2005), and Jud Thigpen (2003) for fifth on the DSU single season list with 77.
- The Statesmen win in game one snapped a four-game losing skid to the Sharks. DSU improved to 7-4 all-time and 1-2 in NCAA Tournament games.
- DSU Head Coach Mike Kinnison earned win number 852 in game one and improved to 43-26 in the NCAA tournament games after the game one win.
- Delta State concludes the 2016 season with a 42-17 overall record and the Gulf South Conference championship.
