Statesmen Soccer to Host Pair of GSC Contests

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State men's soccer team will seek its first Gulf South Conference win when it hosts Spring Hill College on Friday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m., and the University of West Florida on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. at Delta Field. Free pizza will be provided by Cleveland Domino's, and the first 100 attendees will receive a free pair of sunglasses. 
 
INSIDE THE SERIES: 
  • DSU leads the series 4-3 against Spring Hill. This will be the eighth meeting between the two schools.
  • The Statesmen lost 1-0 at Spring Hill last season.
  • DSU is currently 3-11 in its series with West Florida.
  • In the last meeting between the two teams, Delta State defeated West Florida 2-1 in overtime.
 
ABOUT DSU:  
  • The Statesmen are currently 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
  • DSU's scoring offense currently ranks third in the Gulf South Conference. The Statesmen rank third in assists per game averaging 1.8, and fourth in points per game in the GSC with 7.
  • The Statesmen have scored 13 goals on the season and rank third in the GSC.
  • They enter Friday's match coming off a 5-0 loss against in-state GSC rival Mississippi College.
  • Ricardo Filho leads the Statesmen offense with four goals and eight points. He ranks second in points and fourth in goals in the GSC.
  • Andrew Aur is second on the team with two goals in five games played.
  • Peyton Marter leads the team with three assists and Juan Brito is close behind with two. Marter currently ranks third in the GSC in assists.
  • Freshman Zachary Breaux has made an impact on the pitch scoring two goals in three games played.
 
ABOUT SPRING HILL:
  • The Badgers are 1-4-1 and 1-1 in GSC play.
  • In six games, Spring Hill have found the back of the net seven times and are averaging 8.7 shots per game.
  • Ibrahima Ndaw and Donte Oliver lead the Badgers offense. Ndaw has three goals, 10 shots, five shots on goal and six points. Oliver has two goals and two assists, eight shots, three shots on goal and six points on the season thus far.    
  • In goal, Will Carpenter has made 27 saves and allowed 14 goals in the back of the net.   
 
ABOUT WEST FLORIDA:
  • West Florida is currently 1-3 and 1-0 in the GSC.
  • The Argonauts are averaging 10.5 shots per game and 1.25 goals per game.
  • Marteinn Urbancic leads the Argonaut offense with two goals, four points, six shots, and three shots on goal.
  • In goal, Phil D'Amico has faced 46 shots, made nine saves and allowed nine goals.
 
UP NEXT: The Statesmen will travel to Huntsville, Ala., to take on the University of Alabama-Huntsville for another GSC matchup on Friday, Sept. 30. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m.
