Lady Statesmen Host UNA, UAH to Close Homestand

CLEVELAND, Mississippi - After dropping the first two games of Gulf South Conference play this season, for the first time since the 2004-2005 season, the Delta State University women's basketball team has won three of its last four games and carries a two-game win-streak into a weekend set with North Alabama and Alabama Huntsville.

TIP-OFF NEWS AND NOTES
 
  • This will be the 58th meeting all-time between the Lady Statesmen and North Alabama, with DSU leading the series 50-7. Delta State leads all-time series against Alabama Huntsville with an 18-5 edge over the Chargers. 
  • Having boasted the best scoring-defense mark in NCAA Division II basketball last season, the Lady Statesmen currently rank first in scoring defense in the Gulf South. The Lady Statesmen are holding teams to 55.8 points per game and have given up 669 points, which is the best in the league. DSU is currently 19th in the country in scoring defense. 
  • Delta State is the fourth best on the offensive glass at 13.0 offensive rebounds per night, and are second in the league in turnover margin (+2.0) to North Alabama (+7.7). 
  • Senior Kaelin Kneeland has been a huge spark in the Lady Statesmen' win streak. Kneeland is averaging 16.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 33.5 minutes per game over the past two games, including games of 20 points and 12 rebounds, and 12 points and seven rebounds. 
  • Sophomore point guard Alondrea Rush has continued to lead the offense for Delta State, averaging a team-high 12 points per game. She is also adding 2.9 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game while playing 34.8 minutes per contest.  
  • North Alabama is led by star freshman Ivy Wallen, who is the second leading scorer in the GSC at 19.4 points per game. Wallen adds 5.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.4 steals per game to fill things out for the Lions. She is second in the conference in steals at 31. UNA makes the most three-point field goals per game as a team at 7.5 per game, and has drilled the second most three-point shots on the season thus far with 98. 
  • For Alabama Huntsville, Baylee Johnson leads the charge averaging 11.2 points per game. Johnson is the only player for UAH to start every game, and is shooting 91% from the free throw line. Chandler Elder chips in 9.3 points per game and is the teams leading rebounder at 6.5 rebounds per contest.

After wrapping up their homestand, the Lady Statesmen hit the road for trips to Valdosta State and West Florida, and Alabama Huntsville and North Alabama. Delta State plays Valdosta State on Jan. 19 at 5 p.m. and West Florida Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. DSU then plays at Alabama Huntsville on Jan. 26 at 5:30 p.m. and North Alabama at Jan. 28 at 1 p.m.
