Lady Statesmen Prepped to Visit Valdosta, West Florida

CLEVELAND, Mississippi - Having won three out of its last four games and four of its last six, the Delta State University women's basketball team is set to close out the first round of Gulf South Conference play with visits to Valdosta State and West Florida.

TIP-OFF NEWS AND NOTES
 
  • This will be the 44th meeting all-time between the Lady Statesmen and Valdosta State, with DSU leading the series 38-5. Delta State narrowly leads all-time series against West Florida, with a 12-9 edge over the Argonauts.
  • A year removed from posting the best scoring-defense mark in NCAA Division II basketball, the Lady Statesmen currently rank first in scoring defense in the GSC, giving up 55.6 points per game. Delta State also currently ranks 17th in NCAA Division II in scoring defense. 
  • In their six games since the Christmas holidays, the Lady Statesmen are holding opponents to a mere 50.8 points per game. In that same stretch, Delta State has held the opposing team's leading scorer to single-digit points on three separate occasions, including holding Union's Jada Smith scoreless in 35 minutes of action. 
  • Delta State is the fourth best in the GSC on the offensive glass at 12.9 offensive rebounds per game, and are second in the league in turnover margin (+2.1) to North Alabama (+6.9). 
  • Senior Kaelin Kneeland has been a huge spark in the Lady Statesmen over the past four games. Kneeland is averaging 15.8 points and 7 rebounds per game over the past four games, including a pair of 20-point games. Kneeland is averaging 13.1 points in conference play for the Lady Statesmen
  • Sophomore point guard Alondrea Rush has continued to lead the offense for Delta State, averaging a team-high 11.9 points per game. She is also adding 3.2 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game while playing 34.7 minutes per contest.  
  • Madi Mitchell and Kenya Simone' Dixon lead the way for the Blazers. Mitchell is fourth in the GSC in scoring and third in rebounding, averaging 16.4 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Mitchell is also shooting 54% from the floor. Dixon is second on the team and fifth in the GSC with 16.1 points per game. Dixon adds 8.7 rebounds per game and leads the GSC in three-point field goal percentage, knocking down 43% of her attempts from deep.
  • For West Florida, Toni Brewer leads the Argonauts. Brewer is averaging 15.1 points per game and is pulling down a GSC-leading 12.2 rebounds per game. Katie Bobos (11.9 points), Imani Mulmore (10.2 points), Alex Coyne (9.9 points and 6.5 assists), Courtney Meyer (9.5 points), and Katie O'Neal (9.1 points) round out a balanced scoring attack for the GSC's fourth-highest scoring offense.
