West Florida Slips Past Statesmen 83-78

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 24 Delta State University men's basketball team allowed 52 second half points as West Florida knocked off the Statesmen at UWF Field House.

How It Happened:
  • The Argonauts opened scoring with a Deangelo Legrier jumper, but Delta State answered with a Brett Warner jumper and Cedric Harper dunk to grab an early 5-2 lead.
  • Both offenses went back-and-forth, but the Statesmen grabbed a 21-19 lead after a Ravion Henry three-pointer.
  • Going into the final 10 minutes of the first half with Delta State shooting 7-for-14 from the field and West Florida 6-for-14.
  • At the five-minute mark, the Statesmen maintained a 29-25 lead over the Argonauts.
  • DSU held the Argonauts scoreless for almost four minutes late in the first half.
  • Both squads would score six points as the first half ended, and the Statesmen nursed a 35-31 lead.
  • UWF finished the half just 10-of-27 (37 percent) and 4-of-13 from long-range, while Delta State was 15-of-28 (54 percent) from the field.
  • The Argonauts out-rebounded the Statesmen by a slim margin of 17-16, and UWF had 9 second chance points in the first 20 minutes.
  • Devin Schmidt and Henry led DSU with 10 points apiece from the field. Motor Deng led the Argonauts with 10 first half points.
  • Schmidt got the offense going in the second half with two jumpers, but UWF responded with an 8-0 run claiming the lead, 43-39.
  • The Statesmen maintained the 59-53 lead going into the final 10 minutes shooting 7-of-16 for the half.
  • UWF responded going on a 9-0 run and reclaiming the lead, 62-60 at the 8:19 mark.
  • Entering the final five minutes of the game, both offenses were neck-and-neck with six lead changes.
  • UWF reclaimed the lead late in the second half with a Jason Laatsch three-pointer and Darryl Tucker layup.
  • With a Schmidt free throw entering the final minute of play brought the margin to three points, 74-77.
  • UWF closed out the game with a trio of free throws and claimed the 83-78 victory.
  • DSU finished 28-of-59 (48 percent), while the Argonauts were 28-of-59 (48 percent). UWF was 21-of-31 from the free throw line. The Statesmen were just 16-of-20. UWF out-rebounded DSU by a slim margin of 36-31 and forced 14 turnovers, while committing 13 of their own.
  • Legrier led West Florida with 20 points and Deng secured 18. Schmidt led with 27 points, six boards and six assists while Henry finished with 19 points and seven rebounds.
 
Notables:          
  • Schmidt's six assists moved him into fourth place in DSU history in all-time assists with 434.
  • Henry's 19 points are a career high for the junior.
