Argonauts Drop Lady Statesmen

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Delta State University women's basketball team allowed a season-high in points as West Florida knocked off the Lady Statesmen at UWF Fieldhouse.

How It Happened:
  • The Argonauts' offense quickly got on a 5-0 start, but a Kaelin Kneeland jumper got the Lady Statesmen on the scoreboard in the first three minutes.
  • Inside the final five minutes of the first quarter, Delta State struggled scoring only four points, but UWF closed out with a 18-10 lead.
  • Kneeland opened the second quarter with jumper, but UWF continued its hot shooting scoring seven-straight points extending the lead 25-12.
  • The Lady Statesmen continued to battle before the half going 6-for-13 since the 7:24 mark, but the Argonauts went into the locker room with a commanding 43-27 lead.
  • DSU finished the half just 12-of-27 (44 percent) and 2-of-6 from long-range, while the leaders were 13-of-30 (43 percent) from the field.
  • The Argonauts out-rebounded the Lady Statesmen 22-12, and UWF had 13 second chance points in the first 20 minutes.
  • Alondrea Rush and Kneeland led DSU with eight points apiece from the field. Katie Bobos led the Argonauts with 13 first half points.
  • The Lady Statesmen quickly grabbed a basket at the start of the third quarter, but struggled only scoring six points in the first five minutes. The Argonauts shot 3-for-7 and maintained a 54-33 lead.
  • UWF ended the third quarter on a 9-6 run with a jumper by Toni Brewer to keep the 63-39 lead.
  • The Argonauts continued the final stanza with hot shooting going on a 16-2 run, extending their lead to 34 points with 4:52 left in the game.
  • UWF also held DSU without a basket for nearly four minutes in the fourth quarter.
  • UWF closed out the game with a jumper and claimed the 87-51 victory.
  • DSU finished 20-of-51 (39 percent), while the Argonauts were 28-of-61 (46 percent). UWF was 5-of-8 from long-range. The Lady Statesmen were just 2-of-10. UWF out-rebounded DSU by a wide margin of 45-23, and forced 14 turnovers, while committing only eight.
  • Brewer led West Florida with 20 points and Bobos secured 16. Kneeland led with 16 points and six boards while Rush and Anissa Jackson finished with 12 points apiece. Rush was 5-of-11 shooting and Jackson was 4-of-10.
 
Notables:          
  • Rush's 13 points puts her in double-figures for the 12th time this season.
  • West Florida's 87 points is the most the Lady Statesmen have allowed all season, and the loss was the second-worst in program history in terms of margin.

  • The Lady Statesmen hit the road again for matchups against Alabama Huntsville on Jan. 26 at 5:30 p.m. and North Alabama at Jan. 28 at 1 p.m.
