Lady Statesmen To Square Off With Alabama Huntsville, North Alabama

CLEVELAND, Mississippi - The Delta State University women's basketball team will look to rebound from a pair of tough losses at Valdosta State and West Florida as they hit the road again to take on Alabama Huntsville on Jan. 26 and North Alabama on Jan. 28.

TIP-OFF NEWS AND NOTES
 
  • This will be the 25th meeting all-time between the Lady Statesmen and Alabama Huntsville, with DSu holding a 19-5 series advantage. Delta State holds command of the all-time series against the North Alabama Lions 50-8.
  • After having the best scoring-defense mark in NCAA Division II basketball last season, the Lady Statesmen currently rank first in scoring defense in the GSC, giving up 57.4 points per game. Delta State also currently ranks 30th in NCAA Division II in scoring defense. 
  • Delta State has held the opposing team's leading scorer to single-digit points on three separate occasions since the holiday break.
  • The Lady Statesmen own the fourth best mark in the GSC on the offensive glass, pulling down 12.5 offensive rebounds per game, and are third in the league in turnover margin to North Alabama ( 6.9) and West Georgia ( 1.87).
  • Senior Kaelin Kneeland has been a huge spark for the Lady Statesmen this season. Kneeland is averaging 12.9 points in conference play, and is also averaging 14.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game over the past six games, including a pair of 20-point performances.
  • Sophomore point guard Alondrea Rush has continued to lead the offense for Delta State, averaging a team-high 12.6 points per game. She is also adding 3.0 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game while playing 35 minutes per contest.
  • Alabama Huntsville is led by Baylee Johnson and Chandler Elder, who are averaging in double-figures. Johnson paces the team with 12.1 points per game. In 34.3 minutes per game, Johnson is adding 3.1 rebounds. Elder is averaging 10.0 points per game and is also averaging 6.7 rebounds, two assists and leads UAH in free throws with 68 made on 95 attempts so far this season.
  • North Alabama is led by star freshman Ivy Wallen. Wallen is second in the GSC in scoring, averaging 19.8 points per game. She is also averaging 5.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.4 steals while leading the team in total points, steals, free throws made, field goals made and minutes played. KeKe Gunter is second on the team for the Lions averaging 15.3 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game.

After tilts against Alabama Huntsville and North Alabama, the Lady Statesmen get five consecutive home games, beginning with a game against West Florida on Feb. 2 at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 2 will be Organization Night as well at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
