Statesmen Close Campaign with Southwest Baptist, Northeastern State

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Delta State University men's soccer team closes out its 2017 campaign with a pair of road contests against Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association foes, as the Statesmen travel to Bolivar, Mo. on Oct. 26 to take on Southwest Baptist University and to Tahlequah, Okla. on Oct. 28 to take on Northeastern State University.

 INSIDE THE SERIES: 
 
  • Southwest Baptist leads the all-time series 1-0 with the Statesmen, having knocked off Delta State 3-1 in 2012.
  • Northeastern State and Delta State will be squaring off for the first time in each program's history. 

ABOUT SOUTHWEST BAPTIST:
 
  • Southwest Baptist enters its tilt with Delta State sporting a 1-13 record and a 1-5 mark in MIAA play. 
  • The Bearcats are led by leading point man Jose Maruffo, whose five points (two goals and one assist) are tops on the team. 
  • Southwest Baptist has had six different players score at least one goal this season, and John Clerveau is second on the team with three points (one goal and one assist).
  • The Bearcats are coming off of a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands off Northeastern State in MIAA action. Emmanuel Poblano scored a late goal for SBU, but it wasn't enough to get SBU a win.
 
ABOUT NORTHEASTERN STATE:
 
  • The Northeastern State Nighthawks carry a 10-4 overall record and a 5-1 mark in MIAA play coming into the weekend, fresh off a 2-1 win over Southwest Baptist. 
  • The Nighthawks have won their last seven games since a 2-1 overtime loss to Ft. Hays State, outscoring their opponents 24-3 in that span.
  • Joe Garcia leads the way for NSU, with 10 goals and three assists to his credit for a team-high 23 points. Jackson Padilla backs him up with six goals on the year and Ismael Serratos has chipped in five goals and two assists. 
  • The Nighthawks debuted at number one overall in the NCAA Central Region that came out on October 18.
