Christian Brothers Defeats Delta State 74-61 to Foil Upset Bid

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Delta State University men's basketball team got 23 points from Brett Warner, but the Christian Brothers Bucs used a 19-6 run over the final 7:56 of the game to pull away from the Statesmen 74-61 in Gulf South Conference action on Thursday night at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

TURNING POINT:
 
  • Christian Brothers used a 19-6 run over the final 7:56 of game time, including nine points from point guard Jeff Larkin, as CBU pulled away late to spoil Delta State's upset bid at Walter Sillers Coliseum. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • Christian Brothers shot 50 percent (27-for-54) from the floor and 50 percent (13-for-26) from the three-point line in the win, and also went a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
  • The Statesmen went 26-for-57 (45.6 percent) from the floor, their third best shooting performance of the campaign. DSU hit 35.3 percent of their three-point shots (6-for-17) and were 3-of-4 from the free throw line for the night.
  • Delta State scored 36 points in the paint to CBU's 22, but the Bucs outrebounded DSU 33-26.
  • DSU committed just nine turnovers for the game and forced 10 out of CBU. The Statesmen turned CBU's miscues into points, as the Green-and-White tallied 16 points off turnovers.
  • The score was tied nine times and there were nine lead changes in the game.

INSIDE THE FLOW:
 
  • The lead changed seven times in the opening nine minutes of the contest, as both teams started out hot from the field. Delta State opened up 9-for-14 from the field (64 percent), and Christian Brothers started 7-for-14 as both teams were tied at 20 with 10:37 left before the half. 
  • CBU built a 12 point lead, using a 12-2 run from the 4:04 mark to the 1:09 mark of the first half. Adam Dieball sparked the run for the Bucs, knocking down a pair of three-pointers and a jumper. 
  • The Statesmen closed the half on a 5-0 run that included a Ravion Henry three-pointer and a Brett Warner jumper to run the score to 43-36 at the halftime intermission.
  • Brett Warner dialed up a trio of three-pointers as part of a 13-2 run out the locker room as the Statesmen stormed back to a 49-45 lead with 14:55 left to play in the game. 
  • The teams would continue to trade baskets, and with the score tied 57-57, the Bucs locked in down the stretch and used a 17-4 run in the last six minutes of the contest to pull away late. 

NOTABLES:
 
  • DSU scored 14 of their first 20 points in the paint, and registered their second highest point total of the season (36) in the painted area. 
  • Delta State got three or more players in double-figures for the third time this season, led by Warner's 23 points. PJ Davis and Ravion Henry each chipped in 12 points on the evening. 
  • Junior Armon Benford had six points, six rebounds, five assists and a steal for the Green-and-White.
  • Preseason All-Gulf South Conference selection Adam Dieball scored a game-high 24 points, including going 5-of-9 from three. The junior added nine rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes of work. 
  • Jeff Larkin added point guard 16 points for CBU, and Alex Trentman tallied 13 points and six rebounds while going 6-for-7 from the field. 
  • Christian Brothers snapped a five-game losing skid to Delta State with the win.
