Monix Helps Propel DSU Past Union 71-53 For First GSC Win

CLEVELAND, Miss. - Cameron Monix scored a career-high 13 points, and PJ Davis chipped in 19 as the Delta State University men's basketball team outscored Union University 46-27 in the second half en route to its first Gulf South Conference win of the year on Saturday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

TURNING POINT:
  • Trailing by one at the break, the Statesmen took the lead on a pair of PJ Davis free throws that helped spark a 12-2 run as Delta State took a 37-28 lead and never looked back in snagging their first Gulf South Conference win. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • Delta State shot 46 percent (26-for-56) from the floor and went 4-for-16 from beyond the three-point line. The Statesmen were 15-for-24 (63 percent) from the free throw line.
  • Union was just 18-of-49 from the floor in the loss, shooting 37 percent for the game. The bulldogs went 7-of-24 from three (29 percent) and 10-of-15 (67 percent) from the free throw line. 
  • Delta State had 14 assists to just five turnovers, and out-rebounded the Bulldogs 35-31.
  • The Statesmen outscored Union 32-14 in the paint and forced 14 turnovers, scoring 15 points off of Union's mistakes. 

     
INSIDE THE FLOW:
 
  • Delta State got two quick buckets from Brett Warner and Ravion Henry to take an early 4-0 lead in the first minute of the game, but Union responded with a pair of layups from Tevin Florent and Pedro Da Silva as the two teams were tied 6-6 with 13:55 left in the first half. 
  • Both teams continued to go back and fourth, as the lead changed four times in the opening half of play. 
  • a 5-0 run for Cameron Burkett gave Delta State a 21-18 lead with 3:18 to go in the half, but Union doubled up DSU 8-4 the rest of the way to take a 26-25 lead at the break. 
  • The Statesmen used a 12-2 run to start the second half, getting eight points in the spurt from Davis as DSU took a lead that they held the rest of the way. 
  • A 10-0 run from the 9:26 mark to the 7:05 mark of the second half helped Delta State build a 15-point lead, their largest of the game, while Delta State clamped down defensively to hold Union scoreless over a four minute stretch to take control of the game.
  • DSU outscored Union 46-27, their widest margin in any half thus far this season, in securing their first conference win.

NOTABLES:
 
  • Senior guard Cam Monix scored a career-high 13 points while going 4-of-5 from the field. Monix was 2-for-2 from three-point territory and was 3-of-4 at the free throw line. He added two rebounds and two assists in 26 minutes of action.
  • Delta State committed a season-low five turnovers in notching the win.
  • The Green-and-White put three players in double-figures for the second consecutive game and the fourth time this year. Davis had 19, Warner had 17 and Monix had 13 on the evening. 
  • Todd Barnes scored 20 points to lead Union in the loss, and Tyree Boykin added 17 points and four three-pointers.
