Arkansas Monticello Brushes Past Statesmen 72-56

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Delta State University men's basketball team got 22 points from senior forward PJ Davis and Cameron Monix added a career-high nine steals, but it was not enough against the University of Arkansas at Monticello as the Statesmen fell 72-56 at the hands of the Boll Weevils on Saturday evening at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

TURNING POINT:
 
  • The Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils used a 15-5 run to close the first half as they took a 39-25 lead at the halftime intermission and never looked back en route to their seventh win of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • Delta State shot 35.8 percent (19-for-53) from the floor, while UAM was 27-of-51 (52.9 percent) from the floor in the win. 
  • The Statesmen went just 2-of-18 from three in the loss and went 16-of-27 (59 percent) from the free throw line. The Boll Weevils, meanwhile, were 7-of-18 (39 percent) from downtown and went 11-of-15 from the foul line (73 percent). 
  • DSU gave up a season-high 40 points in the paint, and committed 14 turnovers. 
  • The Green-and-White had 14 second chance points to UAM's five, but UAM had 17 assists to Delta State's 12. 

INSIDE THE FLOW:
 
  • The first half saw four ties and nine lead changes, as both teams went back and forth early. 
  • Dietrich Taylor's free throw put DSU out front 13-12 at the 11:41 mark of the first half, but Arkansas-Monticello responded with a 10-1 run to take a nine-point, 22-13 advantage with 8:10 to go before the break. 
  • Brett Warner rattled off seven of the game's next nine points, guiding Delta State on a quick 7-2 run cut the Boll Weevils lead down to four, 24-20, with 6:38 remaining in the half. 
  • The Boll Weevils again responded, closing the half on a 15-5 spurt to take a 39-25 halftime advantage. 
  • A PJ Davis layup cut the margin down to 11, 63-52, with 3:57 left in the game, but that is as close as the Statesmen would get in the second half.
  • Jamil Maddred's layup pushed the lead back to 13, and the Boll Weevils ended the game on a 9-4 run to secure the win.

NOTABLES:
 
  • Senior forward PJ Davis played in his 100th game in a Statesmen uniform, and has now made 48 starts for the Green-and-White. 
  • The Statesmen registered a season-high 13 steals as a team, including a career-high nine steals from Cameron Monix
  • Brett Warner added 17 points to tally double-digits for the fourth consecutive game.
  • Davis notched 20 points for the first time this season, tying his career-high with 22 points. He also added eight rebounds on the night.
