Statesmen And UWA Split Doubleheader To Open GSC Slate

 LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Tyler Brown belted a home run and had three RBIs to lead Delta State University to a 6-4 win over the University of West Alabama (6-4, 1-1 GSC) in game one of a doubleheader on Sat., at Tartt Field. Dylan Little had three RBI's to lead the Tigers to a 10-5 win in the night cap to set up Sunday's series deciding game three at 1 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM1)
  • Justin Nussbaum scored the first run of the game on an RBI fly-out by Brian Lane in the top of the second inning to put the Statesmen up 1-0.
  • Brown's two-run home run to left extended DSU's lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth. The home run was his second of the season.
  • UWA scratched across its first run of the day, as Tyler Lee singled to left to score Luke Phillips and cut DSU's lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • The Tigers made it 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, as Nick Delgado and Marcus Morrisette came in to score on a fielder's choice and an RBI single by Phillips.
  • The Statesmen reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh, as Dakota Glore's pinch-hit two-RBI single scored Brian Lane and Zack Shannon. Brown delivered his second big hit of the game, stroking an RBI single to center to make it a 6-3 Statesman lead.
  • West Alabama threatened in the bottom of the eighth, but Statesman reliever Zach Osbon worked out of the jam without surrendering a run.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, UWA plated an unearned run off Brady Chambley before the closer slammed the door on a 6-4 DSU victory.      
 
ON THE MOUND (GM1)
  • Corey Beard (2-0) earned the win after working 6.2 innings in his third start of the year for the Statesmen. The senior from Jefferson City, Mo., allowed three earned runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
  • Osbon worked 1.1 innings of relief, allowing two hits while striking out three Tigers.
  • Chambley closed out the ninth, allowing one unearned run, for his first save of the season.  

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM2)
  • Delgado reached on an infield single and scored when Josh Winningham reached on a fielder's choice to give UWA a 1-0 lead in the first.
  • Clay Casey tied the game, 1-1, with a solo home run to left field in the top of the second.
  • The Tigers scored the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead. Lee hit a solo home run to right. Delgado doubled home Tyler Sims and Delgado scored on a Taylor Stafford sac-fly.
  • Delta State answered with two runs in the top of the third to cut the UWA lead to 4-3. Jason Popovich singled and later scored on a balk and Emil Ellis single and scored on a ground out.
  • West Alabama added a run in the bottom of the third to push the lead to 5-3. Morrisette singled to start the inning and later scored on a wild pitch.
  • Morrisette delivered an RBI double and another run scored on an error in the bottom of the fifth to extend the UWA lead to 7-3.
  • The Statesmen got two runs back in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 7-5. Popovich and Ellis walked to start the inning. Lane doubled home Popovich and Ellis scored a Shannon sac-fly.
  • West Alabama tallied three in the bottom of the sixth to give the Tigers a 10-5 cushion. Little had a two-run double and Joel Murphy doubled home Little.
 
ON THE MOUND (GM2)
  • Statesmen starter Tre Hobbs (1-2) yielded five runs on five hits with five strikeouts against three walks through four innings as the pitcher of record.
  • Brady Badon (3-0) gave up one hit in one scoreless inning of work to earn the win for the Tigers.

NOTEABLES  
  • Brown went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs to lead Delta State on game one.
  • Seven Statesmen collected at least one hit in the 6-4 victory.
  • The game one win improved the Statesmen to 22-15 overall and 12-9 under Mike Kinnison in GSC openers.
  • Zack Shannon went 2-for-3 with a RBI and Josh Russell went 2-for-3 with a double in game two.
  • Clay Casey belted his second home run of the season in game two and is now tied with Tyler Brown for the team lead with two home runs.
  • The game two loss snapped a three-game winning streak against the Tigers.
