Lady Statesmen Hit the Road for Final GSC Weekend

CLEVELAND, Mississippi - After notching a win on Senior Day in its final home game of the season, the Delta State University women's basketball team remains in the hunt for a Gulf South Conference Tournament berth and will travel to play West Alabama on Thursday, Feb. 23 and West Georgia on Saturday, Feb. 25 for the final GSC weekend of the year.

TIP-OFF NEWS AND NOTES
  • Thursday's game marks the 55th meeting between the Lady Statesmen and West Alabama, with Delta State owning a 48-6 advantage. West Georgia and DSU will meet for the 41st time.Delta State owns a 35-5 series lead. 
  • With two games left to play in the regular season, the Lady Statesmen are currently tied for the seventh spot in the GSC standings with Mississippi College and Christian Brothers.
  • Delta State has hung its hat on defense this season, holding the opposition to 55 points or less 15 times this season, including four times allowing 48 points or less. 
  • Sophomore point guard Alondrea Rush has been the go-to sharpshooter for the Lady Statesmen this season. Rush has been the only Lady Statesmen player to hit a three-pointer in 14 games this season, and leads the team with 56 three-pointers on 173 attempts. Rush is already 10th in school history in three-pointers attempted (261) with two games left to play in her sophomore campaign. Rush is averaging 13.3 points per game, 2.9 rebounds, 3.0 assist and 2.1 steals. 
  • The last time out against West Alabama, the Lady Statesmen held UWA to 45 points on just 36 percent shooting. Leading scorer Ariel Wilson was the only UWA player in double figures, as she was held to just 10 points, while Catherine Taylor scored nine. Senior Aspriona Gilbert went for 18 points and Rush added 16 points, four rebounds and three assists.
  • Delta State defeated West Georgia 63-56 in a Jan. 7 matchup at Walter Sillers Coliseum. De'Ashia Jones went for 18 points for UWG, but had no one else with more than nine points against DSU. The Lady Statesmen saw senior Kaelin Kneeland score 20 points and grab 12 rebounds, while junior Ieysha Mays had 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals. 
UP NEXT

After tilts against West Alabama and West Georgia, the Gulf South Conference Tournament kicks off with Super Tuesday on February 28. The top eight teams in the final standings make the conference tournament field, and the top four seeds in the tournament will have home games. The semifinals and GSC championship game will be held on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5, respectively, in Birmingham, Ala.
