Lady Statesmen, Valdosta Square Off in GSC Quarterfinals

VALDOSTA, Ga - The Delta State University women's basketball won their final three games of the regular season to earn the seventh seed in the Gulf South Conference tournament, earning themselves a Super Tuesday matchup the Valdosta State University on Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT.

TIP-OFF NEWS AND NOTES
  • Tuesday's Super Tuesday matchup marks the 46th time that the Lady Statesmen and Valdosta State Lady Blazers will face off, including the ninth time in the GSC tournament. Delta State owns the overall series advantage (38-7) as well as the advantage in the GSC tournament (7-1). 
  • DSU will make its 30th GSC tournament appearance on Tuesday, owning a 58-13 overall tournament record. 
  • Delta State has dropped both matchups against Valdosta State so far this season, falling 53-50 at Valdosta and 48-38 at Walter Sillers Coliseum. 
  • The Lady Statesmen have hung their hat on defense this season, holding the opposition to 55 points or less 15 times this season, including four times allowing 48 points or less. Delta State is currently tops in the league and 18th in the country in scoring defense (56.8 points per game allowed). 
  • Sophomore point guard Alondrea Rush has been the go-to sharpshooter for the Lady Statesmen this season. Rush has been the only Lady Statesmen player to hit a three-pointer in 14 games this season, and leads the team with 60 three-pointers on 187 attempts. Rush is already 10th in school history in three-pointers attempted (275). Rush is averaging 13.2 points per game, 3.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.1 steals. 
  • After being picked to finish 9th in the preseason poll, Valdosta State finished 2nd in the GSC, putting together a 19-9 campaign that included a 16-6 mark in league play under first year head coach Carley Kuhns, who was a standout player for the Lady Blazers. 
  • VSU is led by Madi Mitchell, who scores 16.5 points per game and snares 8.4 rebounds. Kenya Samone Dixon adds 15.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, and leads the GSC in three-point field goal percentage at 42%. Dixon's 71 treys have helped Valdosta State average 70 points per game as a team.
