Statesmen Host In-State Rival Mississippi College

CLEVELAND, Miss. -  The Delta State University men's basketball team continues its winning streak after upsetting No. 24 Valdosta State on Saturday. This week, DSU plays game three of five at Walter Sillers facing in-state rival Mississippi College on Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

  • The Statesmen improved to 15-6 on the season and fourth in the GSC with a 10-5 record.
  • DSU will play game three of its five game home stand on Monday with in-state rival Mississippi College, who is currently winless on the road and on a eight-game losing streak sits bottom of the GSC table with an 1-14 conference record. The Choctaws rank 11th in the GSC scoring an average 73 points per game. They are led by a quad of scoring leaders with Stacey Mack (12.9 ppg), Antonio Johnson (12.4 ppg), DeOndre Haynes (12.2 ppg) and Xavion Dillon (11.2 ppg) all averaging double digits.
  • The series with MC started in 1928 with the Choctaws taking the inaugural 52-16 win in Clinton. Mondays's matchup is the 93rd meeting all-time. Earlier this season, DSU defeated the Choctaws 68-58 at A.E. Wood Coliseum.
  • As a team, the Statesmen average 75.3 points per game, which ranks eighth in the league. On the defensive side of the ball, Delta State rank second in the GSC holding its opponents to an average 69 points per game.
  • Senior guard Devin Schmidt is averaging 23 points per game which ranks second in the league and 4.4 assists per game to rank third. Schmidt has scored 2,356 career points (20.8 ppg), is 43 percent (786-of-1826) from the floor and 36.4 percent from three-point range (281-of-772). He needs 214 points to become the GSC's all-time leading scorer.
  • The newcomers are making an impact on the floor. Among those, Cedric Harper is averaging 6.6 points and 5.8 boards per game. Harper ranks third in the league averaging 1.8 blocked shots per game.
