Statesmen Prepped For Lee and Shorter

CLEVELAND, Miss. -  The Delta State University men's basketball team closed out the weekend with a pair of wins after upsetting then No. 24 Valdosta State and beating in-state rival Mississippi College on Monday night to extend the winning streak to four games. This week, the Statesmen close out the five-game home stand against Lee University on Feb. 9 and then Shorter University on Feb. 11.

  • The Statesmen improved to 16-6 on the season and moved up a spot to third in the Gulf South Conference with a 11-5 record.
  • DSU will now face Lee University, who is currently on a seven-game losing streak and sits 10th in the GSC table with a 5-11 conference record.
  • The Flames rank 10th in the GSC scoring an average 74 points per game and sit mid-table for scoring defense allowing an average of 76 points per game. They are led by a trio of scoring leaders with Keevin Tyus (18 ppg), Rico Overall (12.5 ppg) and Jervon Johnson (10.9 ppg) all averaging double digits.
  • Earlier this season, DSU defeated the the Flames 87-71 at Paul Dana Walker Arena. Lee post an 0-3 record when traveling to Walter Sillers Coliseum.
  • After Lee, Delta State will face-off against Shorter University to wrap up the five-game home stand. The series with Shorter is relatively young with DSU holding a slim 5-4 advantage over the Hawks.
  • Shorter is led by standout guard Phil Taylor, who is averaging 34 points per game and leads the GSC in multiple categories.
  • As a team, the Statesmen average 75.8 points per game, which ranks eighth in the league. On the defensive side of the ball, Delta State rank second in the GSC holding its opponents to an average 69 points per game.
  • Senior guard Devin Schmidt is averaging 23 points per game which ranks second in the league and 4.4 assists per game to rank third. Schmidt has scored 2,386 career points (20.9 ppg), is 43.1 percent (796-of-1845) from the floor and 36.4 percent from three-point range (286-of-782). He needs 214 points to become the GSC's all-time leading scorer.
  • The newcomers are making an impact on the floor. Among those, Cedric Harper is averaging 6.6 points and 5.6 boards per game. Harper ranks third in the league averaging 1.7 blocked shots per game.

Up next, the Green-and-White hit the road for a matchup at Union University on Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. The Statesmen will then return home to face Christian Brothers University for the final home game of the season on Feb. 18 at 4 p.m.
