Diamond Statesmen Rally Past Reddies, 15-13

CLEVELAND, Miss. –  No. 23 Delta State University (19-7) used a four-run seventh to cap a comeback a 12-3 deficit to upend Henderson State University (16-9) 15-13 on Tuesday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hayden Lessenberry hit a solo home run to left field with two outs to give Henderson State a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • Juwan Burney reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Zack Shannon sac-fly to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first.
  • The Reddies scored six runs on six hits and took advantage of an error to build a 7-1 lead in the third. Jordan Taylor, Joseph Shepherd, Kearon Redmon, Alan Hall and Joey Myers drove in runs for HSU.
  • The Statesmen got a run back in the bottom of the third when Burney's sac fly scored Jason Popovich to trim the HSU lead to 7-2.
  • Henderson State added four runs in the fourth to take an 11-2 lead. Redmon drove two runs while a pair of runs crossed on a throwing error and a wild pitch.
  • Emil Ellis drew a leadoff and scored on a Cody Young sac-fly to left to trail 11-3 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • A Joe Myers home run to left center gave HSU a 12-3 lead in the top of the fifth.
  • The Statesmen scored four run in home half of the fifth to cut the deficit to 12-7. Shannon belted a three-run home run and a run came home on a David Pimentel ground out.
  • Delta State climbed even closer with a four-run sixth. Brian Lane and Casey belted two-run home runs to cut the HSU lead to 12-11.
  • Lassenberry hit his second home run of the day to help the Reddies claim a 13-11 lead in the top of the seventh.
  • The Green-and-White used a four-run seventh to take their first lead and the lead for good. Justin Nussbaum doubled in a run followed by an RBI double by Burney. Casey singled in a run and the fourth run scored on an Ellis sac-fly.
  • Henderson State put a runner on with two outs in the ninth by Jordan Taylor flied out to left field to end the game.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Zach Osbon (5-0) earned the win in relief, allowing one run on four this with three strikeouts in three innings pitched.
  • Jon Younglood (0-2) took the loss for Henderson State, yielding three runs on three hits in less than an inning of work.
 
NOTEABLES
  • Shannon's four RBIs marked his fourth game with four-plus RBIs. Shannon finished the day 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and has now reached base safely in 20 straight games.
  • Lane went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and Casey went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
  • The three home runs by Delta State tied a season-high that previously came against Harding University (2.6) and Lee University (2.26).
  • The 15 hits by the Statesmen was one shy of their season-high of 16 against Mount Olive (2.11). It also marked the third time this season DSU had 15 hits in a game.
  • Delta State improved 4-0 in two-run games and are a combined 8-0 in games decided by two runs or less.

  • Delta State hosts North Alabama in a Gulf South Conference series at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field on Saturday, March 25 with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Statesmen and Lions will then play a single game on Sunday slated for 2 p.m.
