Statesmen Welcome Union, Christian Brothers to Delta Field

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Following a four-game road trip, the Delta State University men's soccer team returns home and continues Gulf South Conference play, when it plays host to Union University on Friday, Sept. 29 at and Christian Brothers University on Sunday, Oct. 1 at Delta Field in Cleveland.

This weekend's games will carry a SocctoberFest theme, with free drinks, $1 bratwurst and $1 pretzels, music and games on Friday. Sunday at Delta Field, there will be a bounce house/slide, yard games, free Domino's pizza, free cotton candy and free funnel cakes.

 INSIDE THE SERIES: 
 
  • Union holds a 6-4-1 record all-time against the Statesmen, including a 2-1 win last season versus Delta State.
  • Christian Brothers owns a 15-3-1 series edge against Delta State, having collected a 2-1 victory in the last meeting between the two programs.

ABOUT UNION:
 
  • The Bulldogs are winless in their first six outings this season, and hold an 0-3 mark in GSC play.
  • Senior Paul Langford, a Millington, Tenn., native, is the leading goal scorer for the Bulldogs, tallying a pair of goals through the team's first six games. 
  • Union has struggled to find the back of the net to this point. The Bulldogs have been shutout twice and have mustered just five goals in their first half dozen contests.
  • The Bulldogs have come up just short in GSC play, falling 2-1 at home in double overtime to Shorter and 1-0 at home to Lee. Union has an 0-2 record away from Smith Memorial Soccer Complex in Jackson, Tenn.

ABOUT CHRISTIAN BROTHERS:
 
  • The Bucs come into the weekend with a 4-3 overall record, but are a perfect 3-0 in GSC play with wins over Union, Lee and Shorter.
  • Christian Brothers are winners of four straight games and are led by Brendan Bennett, who has scored four goals this year. Djorde Djordjovic is tied with Bennett for the team lead in points with eight, posting three goals and two assists for the Bucs.
  • After conceding seven goals in its first three games of the season (all losses), CBU has flipped the script in its last four games. The Bucs are outscoring opponents 8-2 in that span, including their three conference wins and a 2-1 overtime victory over Lindenwood.

After contests with Union and Christian Brothers, the Statesmen remain home at Delta Field to host West Alabama on Friday, Oct. 6 and Alabama Huntsville on Sunday, Oct. 8.
