Statesmen Host Harding, Ouachita Baptist to Open Home Slate

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Carrying a 1-1 record after the opening weekend of the season, the Delta State University men's soccer team is set for a pair of home games as a final tune-up before Gulf South Conference play begins. The Statesmen play host to Great American Conference foe Harding University on Friday, Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. at Delta Field, and follow with a Sunday tilt against GAC affiliate Ouachita Baptist that is scheduled for 4 p.m.

INSIDE THE SERIES: 
  • Harding owns an 8-3-1 advantage over Delta State all-time, having edged the Statesmen 1-0 last season. 
  • DSU carries a 5-10 record all-time against Ouachita Baptist, but won their last matchup against the Tigers 1-0 last season.

ABOUT HARDING:
  • Harding enters the contest carrying an 0-1-1 record, fresh off of a draw with NAIA member Williams Baptist. 
  • Junior forward Jason Diaz leads the charge with a pair of goals this season. Diaz, a Waco, Texas native, was a Second Team All-GAC performer in 2015 and was a second team D2CCA All-Central Region selection in the same season. He collected three goals and four assists a season ago.
  • Harding was picked to finish second in the GAC this season behind Oklahoma Baptist.
  • The Bisons went 14-6 a year ago and won the GAC tournament with 2-0 wins over Ouachita Baptist and Oklahoma Baptist.

ABOUT OUACHITA BAPTIST:
  • Ouachita Baptist is currently 2-0 with wins over Dallas Baptist (1-0) and Southwest Baptist (3-0).
  • Senior forward Tinashe Chigede, a Tulsa, Okla. native, has scored all four of the Tigers' goals this season. 
  • OBU went 10-8 a year ago, falling in the first round of the GAC Tournament.
  • The Tigers were picked to finish second in the GAC as well this season, behind Oklahoma Baptist.

UP NEXT: 
The Statesmen hit the road to open up Gulf South Conference play. The Green-and-White will travel to Cleveland, Tenn. to take on Lee University at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15, and then complete the road trip with a game in Rome, Ga. against Shorter University at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17.
