West Alabama Storms Back to Defeat Lady Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Visiting West Alabama outscored the Delta State University women's basketball team 42-16 over the final 18:09 of the game to earn a 64-51 victory in Gulf South Conference action, on Monday at Walter SIllers Coliseum.

TURNING POINT:
  • After trailing 35-21 with 8:09 left in the third quarter, UWA outscored the Lady Statesmen 42-16 over the final 18:09 to win the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Lady Statesmen were 12-of-36 (33.3 percent) from the floor in the first half, while holding the Tigers to just 6-of-24 (25 percent).
  • DSU converted 10 first half UM miscues into 14 points, while committing six of its own.
  • The Lady Statesmen out-rebounded the visitors 25-21 in the first half.
  • UWA was just 5-of-13 from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes, while the Lady Statesmen were 2-of-3.
  • Alondrea Rush led DSU with 13 first half points, including 11 in the second quarter. Alexis Ross added seven rebounds for DSU. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett had six points to lead UWA.
  • DSU was held to just 8-of-26 (29 percent) in the second half, and finished 20-of-64 (31 percent). After shooting just 25 percent in the first half, the Tigers went 15-of-30 in the final two quarters to finish 21-of-54 (39 percent) . The Tigers were 19-of-34 (56 percent) from the free throw line, while the Lady Statesmen were 7-of-10.
  • The Tigers out-rebounded DSU 24-17 in the second half to finish with a 45-42 edge on the boards.
  • Both teams committed 15 turnovers, but UWA had just five in the second half.
  • Rush finished with a game-high with 26 points, including 24 in the final three quarters. Ross finished with a team-high 11 rebounds. Garrett-Hammett led the visitors with 18 points and 15 rebounds.

 INSIDE THE FLOW:
  • Both teams shot less than 36 percent from the floor in the opening period, but the Lady Statesmen converted five UWA miscues into 10 points to help give them a lead 12-9 after the first quarter.
  • The Lady Statesmen used a 15-0 run over a 7:26 span from the end of the first, and into the second quarter, but UWA chipped away to cut the Lady Statesmen lead to 27-18 at the half.
  • UWA responded in a big way, going on a 19-3 run over the final 8:10, to lead 40-38 after the third quarter.
  • The Tigers continued their run in the fourth quarter, holding the Lady Statesmen without a field goal until Alexis Ross buried a jumper with 6:58 remaining that cut the UWA lead to 45-40. 
  • After Ross' jumper, the Tigers went on a 19-11 run to close out the game.

  • The victory for UWA marked the first for the Tigers at Walter Sillers Coliseum since 2004.
  • Rush's 26 points are a career-high.
  • Ross' 11 rebounds are a career-high.
  • DSU's 42 rebounds, and 13 offensive boards are a season-high.
  • DSU has held opponents to single digit points in a quarter in 10 of the last 13 games.
  • The 34 free throws by West Alabama are a season-high for any DSU opponent this season.
  • DSU has been outscored 511-460 in the second half this season, including 255-214 in the third quarter.
