Lee Runs Away From Lady Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Lee University outscored the visiting Delta State University women's basketball team 30-6 in the second half, to run away with a 54-27 victory, in Gulf South Conference action, on Thursday at Paul Dana Walker Arena.

TURNING POINT:
  • After trailing 19-11 with 4:11 left in the first half, the Lady Flames went on a 43-8 run over the next 24:11.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • After going 2-for-15 in the first quarter, the Lady Statesmen went 7-for-15 in the second to finish 9-of-30 (30 percent) from the floor in the first half. The Lady Flames were 8-of-23 (34.8 percent in the first half.
  • DSU committed just four turnovers in the first half and forced 10 by Lee.
  • Simone Jackson had five rebounds for the Lady Statesmen, who were outrebounded 22-16 in the opening half.
  • Takisha Jordan led all scorers with 12 first half points, including 10 in the second quarter. Abby Bertram had eight points to lead Lee.
  • DSU was just 2-of-21 (10 percent) in the second half, and finished 11-of-51 (22 percent). Lee finished 18-of-53 (34 percent) and 7-of-29 (24 percent) from the three point line. The Lady Statesmen did not make a three point basket (0-for-13)
  • The Flames outrebounded DSU 19-18 in the second half to finish with a 41-34 advantage on the boards.
  • DSU committed 12 second half turnovers to finish with 16, while Lee had just five in the second half.
  • After finishing the first half with 12 points, Jordan finished the game with 14. Raven Johnson and Jordan led DSU with seven rebounds apiece. Abby Bertram led Lee with 15.

 INSIDE THE FLOW:
  • The teams combined to shoot 5-for-25 in the first period. The Lady Flames got five points from Shelby Brown, helping them take a 9-7 lead after the first 10 minutes.
  • The Lady Statesmen were off to the races in the second quarter, using a 12-0 run to take a 19-11 lead with 4:11 left in the half. Jordan had eight points during a five minute span during the run.
  • Lee responded with an 8-0 run of its own, helping it take a 24-21 lead into halftime.
  • The Lady Flames clamped down on defense in the third quarter, forcing nine DSU turnovers, while holding the Lady Statesmen to just one point to take a 39-22 lead into the final frame. DSU had its lone point in the quarter come on a free throw by Aliyah Herod with 11 seconds left.
  • DSU was held without a field goal in the second half until Raven Johnson scored on a putback with 4:08 left in the fourth

NOTABLES:
  • The 27 points by the Lady Statesmen marks the lowest total in the modern era.
  • Jordan has scored in double figures in all but two games this season.
  • DSU held the hosts to their lowest point total of the season.
  • DSU's 41 rebounds is just one less than its season high.
  • DSU has held opponents to single digit points in a quarter in 11 of the last 14 games.
